You would think that being the bands first album, the songwriting would be a bit more common style, and that the production isnt that heavy, and the guitar might be closer to a hard rock gain than metal but youd be so wrong.
This is everything you love about savatage wether you got into the mountain king album or edge of thorns stuff first you will hear this and its instantly recignizable, and in a lot of ways it sounds heavyer than some of their later stuff.
The production has a very raw edgy feel and criss's tone is so untamed, no compression and it doesnt have that low end woddy ton you hear from the mountain king onward its just pure squealing gain!
This album is a jewel and its amazing to thing it came out about a year before metallicas kill em all was released.
If your into all kinds of metal or mabye your a purist old school metal fan or you wanna hear the roots of prog and epic metal, savatage is a good place be.
