4.0 out of 5 stars If you're lucky, you might get a chunky bit...
Peter "Lord of the Rings" Jackson's first commercial movie release was made on a minuscule budget and with more than a little help from his friends, not to mention mum and dad. It is undeniably a crudely amateurish zombie-populated gore-fest, in the nascent gross-out style that Jackson would push to its ultimate gory conclusion in his more polished next release - the...

1.0 out of 5 stars Come on guys, review the DVD not the film
Sorry to be awkward, but lets review the DVD, not just the film.
Let us ignore for a moment that the film is one of the most overlooked gems of the horror genre, let us forget that Jackson went to extreme lengths to realise his vision on the most basic of equipment, let us gloss over the fact that this film packs more ideas into one minute than most horror films with...

4.0 out of 5 stars It certainly is!, 31 Mar 2003
This review is from: Bad Taste [1989] [DVD] (DVD)
Well, it's pretty much in the title. A low budget horror/comedy flick that has aliens drinking green puke, lots of gore and a plenty of laughs. 'Nough said? Peter Jackson certainly went onto greater things didn't he? Well done that man!

2.0 out of 5 stars A funny exercise in filming, but not much more., 7 Dec 2007
By
I bought this DVD, and returned it because HE AS NOT ANY KIND OF SUBTITLES. Now, about the quality of the film, I don't understand exactly the excitment from other reviewers. The film it's a good example and case study - for and - about the not at all easy task of making a movie with very looooow budget, and if we consider it a parody to sci-fi-horror movies, then it's ok. Filmed at weekends with the help of friends, the "actors" never warm up their interpretations, the talked jokes are almost inexistents (most of the time just plain stupid), and some scenes are way too long and can be boring. It's interesting to see how basic are some tricks to avoid the lack of budget and technical sources, but: the sound is bad, some sequences needed other tipe of filming lenses, sometimes the light used is not enough, the editing doesn't cut the exact moments of the beggining of the action by the actors, etc. The real funny parts of the film are the more gruesome and of real, real, real, bad taste, as you can read in the descriptions by some other reviewers. This film can be shown in film classes for two reasons: 1) to show what to avoid when doing a film (there's lots of examples); 2) to show what can be made with a very low budget (there's also lots of good examples). For the funny real bad taste demonstrated in some scenes, the two stars given, but overall, it doesn't deserves the stupid prices tha some sellers ask for it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Bad taste? Well, just below par really, 12 Jan 2004

This review is from: Bad Taste [1989] [DVD] (DVD)
Compared to the other comedy horror Peter Jackson classics that were Brain Dead and Meet the Feebles in this loose trilogy, this film simply falls way off the mark. It's not as amusing or horrific, although not completely awful either as there are some notable highlights, but to give them away would be a crime if you are intent on purchasing. So to all you PJ fans wishing to complete your collections, by all means buy this title, just dont expect anything special after doing so.
If youve never bought a Jackson horror before and are thinking of doing so, try Braindead or MTF instead- the former being a true gem of the low budget comedy horror genre, latter an example of PJ's originality and all out craziness (essentially the Muppets on acid).
Certainly great examples of PJs early talents, compared to this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard to swallow, 23 Jan 2002

This review is from: Bad Taste [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Peter Jackson's derranged mind has just been blow open to create a funny but very gory film where a group of hell bent aliens take over a peacefull village where they decide to kill every aussie they can get there hands on, pack them up in boxes then send them home. If you love trashy horror movie's with a twist of humor then this is the film for you. In my words the best film i've ever seen! So if you like this try "BRAIN DEAD"
