5.0 out of 5 stars great
though this is a b-sides compilation, every song here is miles ahead of pixies' legions of imitators. even the ones that frank black doesn't rate (manta ray) are fantastic. dancing the manta ray and baileys walk are two of their most powerful moments, and the neil young covers are both excellent too. also worth checking out for the wilder version of river euphrates and...

3.0 out of 5 stars Mainly for fans
As great a band as the Pixies were/are, the experience of listening to a proper Pixies album is where it's at for me, and this collection of random B-sides and live tracks isn't coherent enough for it to stand alongside their proper albums which have such a strong identity of their own. If you're a massive Pixies fan (and why wouldn't you be?) looking for any rare little...

4.0 out of 5 stars Great band, great b sides, 16 Mar 2006
This review is from: Complete 'B' Sides (Audio CD)
I think you can tell a lot about a band from their b sides, their chance to stretch out and experiment. This b sides collection just proves again what a great band the Pixies were.
It's a great collection and stands up to comparison with their albums. It has some pretty strange demented songs (Dance the mantra ray, In Heaven) but few do demented better than Frank Black. Into the White is also a great song, should have been on one of the albums.

5.0 out of 5 stars Genius... sheer genius, 10 April 2001

This review is from: Complete 'B' Sides (Audio CD)
If you're remotely into rock music of the early 90's then you'll love this. There's something on here for everyone: The subtelty of 'Wave of Mutilation' ... the energy of 'Build High' ... the classic rhythms of 'Winterlong'. It also definitely rewards repeat listening - something I've been unable to avoid :-)

Back in the day the release of a new Pixies 12" was always an event, because beyond the obvious appeal of the lead track you got two or three highly entertaining B-sides. Those EPs are out of print now, but here are all of the extra tracks on one great CD.

This CD is everything a B-sides compilation should be. There are crazy live tracks; half-formed ideas; superb misfits; alternative versions of album tracks; throwaway instrumentals and cover versions.

If you are reading this review you probably already know what the band sounds like, but what you need to know is this CD is brilliant and needs to be in your collection if you are a fan of the band. For example, `Into the White' and `Manta Ray' are as good as anything on `Doolittle', whilst the nasty version of `River Euphrates' which opens this disc is superior to its counterpart on `Surfer Rosa'. `Make Believe', sung by drummer David Lovering in tribute to 1980s teen pop sensation Debbie Gibson, will make you smile, as will the mentalism of `Bailey's Walk' and `Santos'. Did I also mention that the two Neil Young covers are thoughtful and beautifully played?

Another thing that is great about `B-sides' is that in under 50 minutes you get a complete cross-section of Pixies' sound from the spiky surf-punk of their early material, through the more expansive and polished sound of `Doolittle' and `Bossanova' to the brash metal of `Trompe le Monde'. The whole package is completed by Black Francis's sleeve notes about each song. A five start treat for Pixies fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars OMG!!!, 15 Mar 2001
This review is from: Complete 'B' Sides (Audio CD)
Well, I recently discovered the Pixies and I wish i had found out about them sooner, they have influenced a thousand bands and quite frankly rock HARD. ;] Its great that they have included two videos, especially one to the unforgettable "Here Comes Your Man". No matter how heavy or soft you like your music, you WILL love the Pixies. 'nuff said ;]

If you're a massive Pixies fan (and why wouldn't you be?) looking for any rare little gems you can pick up on, then of course you should dig into this and see what you can find. Personally, I really like Make Believe, and I love the closing track, the instrumental Letter to Memphis. I think it's killer. However, I couldn't advise much better than borrowing this album or listening to it online and cherry-picking the tracks that you want to add to your Pixies collection, because there are bound to be some here that you could do without (for the completists, I'm not sure why you're even reading my review - just click the "add to basket" button!).

Now & then a band comes along who produce a plethora of good tracks.
The Pixies are one of those groups(I can only think of the WonderStuff & Wildhearts as others).
They end up on 12" EPs,you faithfully buy those singles on vinyl & some bright spark dispenses with a means of playing them!!
Thankfully, the Pixies have saved me a lot of bother by putting those odd essential songs together on one release(The 'Stuffies old record label cheekily sneaked the odd few B sides on the end of albums, meaning you'd need to re-buy their albums for 4 extra songs:Charming!)
Tracks 1,2,4,5,6,7,8 & 9 were regulars on my old turntable & it's superb to hear 'em again after all these years.
If you own either Doolittle & Surfa Rosa/Come On Pilgrim, you NEED this one to compliment them....
