Sad I know, But I'm Hooked,
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Toy Story 3: The Video Game (Playstation 3) (Video Game)
It is sad to admit that I have enjoyed playing this. I have played it with my 3 year old, who loved the split screen in toy box mode and basically we just played hide and seek!
Also played it with my seven year old nephew, who absolutely adored it (despite being more into Ben-10, Pokemon etc). The sad part is that once they stopped playing, I was compelled to continue! I have only really played tox box mode, so won't comment on Story Mode, other than to say I think it is up to the same high standard of graphics and cut scenes that are in TB mode. TB mode is a good mix of free roam and missions, which are maybe a little easy for an adult, but no less fun. Having said that there are some really clever bits in here, the 'Goo' that you can throw around turns things bigger or smaller and must be used for some missions and the sheer volume of missions compensates for the relative ease of some of them. Both main characters (Bo Peep, Slinky, Pork Chop etc) and non characters ask you to do missions with more areas and interactive toys being unlocked as you go. The only gripe I might have is game length, I suspect my nephew and I raced through over 50% of TB mode in 5 or 6 hours. But is soo much fun, I am sure there will be bits we missed and we haven't even looked at Story mode yet! I also suspect that if Disney/Pixar have any sense, they will release DLC, as this is a collect toys kind of game. Good to see that some-one has sat down and thought out a game that not only coincides with the film (which is also great) but stands up in its own right.

I recently bought this cheap on here due to a friend recomendation. I don't usually buy film tie in games as from past experience, they always seem to be cheap, shoddy, awful games (Beowulf, Wall E, Pirates of the carribean for EG)
Anyway having given this one a go, I have to say that I have not had this much fun with a PS3 game in ages. You have a choice of weather to play the main game or simply go to the "Woodys round up" section, which is basically a sandbox type game where you get to build, customise and police your very own wild west town. There's bags of fun to be had in the sandbox game and there are hundreds of missions to do, ranging from staging and collecting various photo shots, horse racing, stunt car tricks, hunting down bandits and throwing them in jail, mining gold etc, etc. You can also collect various paints and costumes to dress up your town with. If you get bored with the same old people and houses in your town, why not give them a makeover, there's horror, space, wild west, fantasy, futuristic, and all sorts of other themes to choose from. You can even transform your town characters into other Disney Pixar faves such as The Incredibles, Nemo and Dory, Wall E and Eve and the monsters from Monsters Inc. This section of the game gave me over 10 hours of solid fun gameplay. The main game itself is also a good laugh, there are missions straight out of the film, ranging from trawling around andys house to find the phone, so that you can trick Andy into playing with the toys one last time, defeating Dr Porkchop and saving the train, racing and collecting missions in the sunny day care center or defeating Zurg with Buzz Lightyear in space (my personal fave). The graphics are awesome, almost exactly like they are in the film itself and the voice acting is superb. All bar Tom Hanks and Tim Allen return to lend thier voice talents to the game but the 2 main leads are replaced very well (In Hanks case, Woody is voiced by his real life brother Jim, who sounds exactly like him) The controls for the most part are brilliant, although some of the main missions are a little difficult for kids if I'm honest. The one BIG flaw in the game is the missions involving cars. These should be some of the funnest missions in the game, the stunt car tracks had me drooling when I unlocked them only to be completely crushed when I tried to do them. The controls for the cars in the game are probably the WORST car controls of any game that I have ever played. Seriously, it's like controlling a giant rubber ball, one nick off of any of the scenery and the car bounces, flips, twirls and even floats in mid air, in fact it does almost anything that a real car would not do. Racing and pulling stunts and tricks is almost impossible and how a 7 or 8 year old is expected to do any of this is beyond me. Even steering the car is a nightmare, you push a little too hard in either direction and the car will stop and do a complete 360o turn. It's almost as if they had a great team to put this game together and then just dragged in someone who has A: Never driven a car in life and B: Never played a video game before, to make the car controls and scenes. Had the rest of the game not been so great, I would have knocked off a lot more than just one star for this. However, there is so much more to this game than cars and racing. A good solid game with hours of enjoyment and only slightly let down by one aspect. Definitely the best movie tie in game I have played yet though. Although if you are planning on buying this for a young child, please be advised, this game is quite challenging in parts, even for adults, so you may find yourself being dragged away from whatever you're doing, to help get your child past certain parts on a regular basis (Not that this is really a bad thing of course) :-)

Wow, this game provides hours of entertainment wether it be through the main storyline or in the sandbox town of 'Woody's Roundup'. There are so few games available today that allow you to play multiplayer with someone physically sat next to you and this game provides hope that it's not a concept forgotten by games developers.
I'm always happy to suggest it when people are round - and although it will guarantee you a strange look from a room of 20-somethings, once you've been playing it for 10 minutes it's undeniable how appropriate the game is for all age groups and the reception it gets is astounding. A necessity for any gamers library and you can finally defeat the EVIL EMPEROR ZURG in high-definition.

A film tie-in game that's worth having!,

This review is from: Toy Story 3: The Video Game (Playstation 3) (Video Game)
Toy Story 3 is a fun and not-too-demanding game for all ages, although story mode contains some hard-ish parts that under-tens might find tricky. The good part is that it is mainly free-play (the Toy Box/Woody's Roundup option is free-play), with lots of mini-missions that are entertaining without being too hard. The storyline mode is also pretty good, but of course it is a bit more structured.
My 11-year-old son played on the game for 8 hours solid after it arrived (possibly not too healthy!). He feels that the PS3-exclusive Zurg option is not as good as it could have been. Zurg is only available in freeplay mode, and needs to be unlocked and then bought before you can use him. There are some mini-missions just for Zurg, and you can visit Zurg's headquarters, but he can't interact with characters other than his minions, and he can't pick up objects. Zurg has a gun, though, and if you have a sports car, it turns into a driveable Zurg car that can also shoot star balls, and it's fun taking this car into the skatepark to perform stunts. So it's a good game (and non-violent), but don't go for the PS3 version just to get the Zurg content. It's good to find a film-tie-in game that's worth having!

Me and my 7 year old started on the Story Mode and I was (yes me lol) just starting to get into it and enjoy it when he suddenly discovered Toy Box mode and that was it! Haven't been able to get him back to the main story since.
All I hear is squeals of delight from him every time he opens a new section which up to now seems to be every 10 mins or so. The Haunted Mansion section (had an atmosphere of Nightmare Before Christmas - very good) as all the others sections he has opened so far have been excellent and very enjoyable. The only grumble I have so far is that it gets boring having to chase down the 'outlaws' and chuck them in jail all the time and it's a bit irritating bumping into them round every corner although you can just ignore them I guess. This part of the game 'toy box mode' is a perfect for children who love to collect items, open new areas, customise people and buildings and do little missions or just simply run around and be childlike. The mission are quite easy and if you are unsure where to go you can use a simple compass (arrow) which appears on the screen and points in the right direction. I would say that toy box mode is definately aimed at children and at their level whereas the main story would suit adults playing with their child, that's if my child would let me play in Story Mode boo hoo. After all there's only so much an adult would want to charge around on Bullseye !!

This review is from: Toy Story 3: The Video Game (Playstation 3) (Video Game)
Like the film trilogy, Toy Story games have a tradition of being fantastic. The latest is no exception, and from the opening "You Got a Friend in Me" title music, it's a great experience. The game is played from a toy map, and split into 2 modes.
Story mode is the usual kid's game, a short experience closely following the film plot. Players control Woody, Buzz and Jess throughout levels including Andy's House and Sunnyside Day Care Centre. Some sections require teamwork by switching characters to perform specific tasks. It's simple stuff, and clear game hints are provided, making it perfectly suited for children. But Toy Box mode is where this excels. Turning Toy Story into an open world adventure may seem like a dubious idea, but it really works. The focus is on playful customisation, townsfolk can be dressed into outfits, buildings can be painted and mini games are everywhere. Missions are handed out from characters like Rex and Hamm, and new areas can be purchased, such as Zurg's Spaceport or Lotso's Enchanted Glenn. Vehicles can be driven, with a nicely done stunt park. Finding every collectible is surprisingly difficult, and the Gold Star challenges add some real longevity. The visuals are also superb. A sometimes frustrating camera, and a slightly undercooked Story mode keep this from being perfect. But Toy Story 3 is amazing fun for players of any age.

Better than the average 'Game of the Film',
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Toy Story 3: The Video Game (Playstation 3) (Video Game)
Usually I wouldn't go near a game that has been released in conjuction with a film, especially ones aimed at children. As soon as I saw the trailer for the Toy Story 3 game, I could tell it was much better than the average 'game of the film'. You play as either Woody, Buzz or Jessie, and each of the characters have their own 'special move' which comes in handy when playing the different levels in the game. I have to say though, that the Toy Box mode is much more fun than the rest of the game. Different characters provide you with various 'missions', some easy, some more difficult. These missions are very addictive, and seem never-ending, but in a good way! You can also customise the town's buildings and townsfolk, as well as the little green aliens.
For anyone wondering whether or not to buy this for a child, I would say yes. There are some very tricky levels and missions, but on the whole, the fun makes up for the slightly more frustrating tasks! It seems to help to play in two player mode. The only reason I've given this game 4 stars is because there are a lot of glitches, and it seems that the more I play, the more it has problems. Falling through the floor, getting stuck in the floor, getting stuck in mid air etc, and it does take a while to load, but once again, what it lacks in glitches it more than makes up for in fun!

...but it's not far off. The game picks up where the film left off, in a way. It shows the characters around a board game, reliving what happened to them over the course of the film, as well as an additional new level. Most of the levels are slightly modified, of course, with new areas not seen in the film, or which had minimal interaction. All fairly standard platform fare, very easy work for any 10 year old, but the game is truly universal, allowing any age group to enjoy it. The characters are what make the game accessible, and the fact the whole voice cast are in the game makes it a unique movie tie-in. That, and the fact it's actually fun to play, instead of other turgid film tie-ins like Harry Potter and Iron Man 2. Woodys Roundup is the other main feature in the game, and is the most addictive side story I've played for a few years. It involves creating a town to live within, completing tasks for strangers and other Toy Story characters, unlocking new areas, defeating enemies, taking control of new characters and generally having a lot of fun along the way. If you loved the film but didn't want it to end, then this game is your solution.

It takes a while to have the game explored, as in the sand box you'll have pretty much to do, well not much, but it take your time for sure, inward the sets it isnt as you could finish the game in half an hour.
My 4 years old boy, take a lot of time doing buzz set and bonny house, for some relaxin he goes to train set, so, for me it's worth all the money i gave for this game.

My daughter loved this game she plays it for hours. As there is a place called woodys roundup and there is no real objective and you can just run or ride around in cars or on your horses, after buying them from the toy barn place, you can speak to the people with "!"s above thier heads to do short missions that earn you money to buy shops and transport from the barn shop, if the have a "?" over thier head it means you have started the mission but not completed it. There are other parts of woodys roundup that you explore while doing missions and then you have "unlocked" the place and you can go back there whenever you want. There is also a main game to work round a game board playing as many diferent characters. As you first start the game you are immeditaly put into the start of the main game ,the train bit at the eginning of toy stroy 3 the film. You can replay missions to find the cards you can collect and other special items.
My daughter thinks this game is one of the best she has and likes playing as zurg! |
