Everybody knows that Aly Bain is Scotland's finest fiddler, and Phil Cunningham its finest mullet. Between them they can work up quite a head of steam; so let's take that as read.

The problem here is the slow airs. Slow airs can make people come over a bit funny; as with poetry, they seem to take the will for the deed, and all critical judgement goes out the window. But actually, whilst a so-so reel or march will still make your toes tap, a poor air can be excruciatingly dull.

Here we have about eight of them, largely original compositions, each given a generous running time of 4 minutes plus: in all, going on for half an hour of boring interchangeable tunes, of the kind any ceilidh band leader can compose. They put a drag on this compilation that the dance sets, good as they are, can't quite lift.

A nice blend of instruments and a good selection of Scottish music. Wasn't too keen on the 'slower' tracks though.
