5.0 out of 5 stars An impressive thriller with great depth and originality
Where would we be without indie filmmakers? The Hanged Man is a real gem of a film featuring - dare I say it? - some actual originality, a really impressive script, solid acting, and a story that actually develops rather than being obvious from the start. 3.0 out of 5 stars WHO IS READY TO DIE TONIGHT?
The film opens with some obscure tarot card flashes and shooting for all of our background information. An on-line forum group opt for a suicide pact, but want to do it all together and by rules. Once they get together they are more concerned about being comfortable than offing themselves. Everyone waits for the person who calls himself Dwarfstar to begin.

3.0 out of 5 stars WHO IS READY TO DIE TONIGHT?, 15 Dec. 2013
This review is from: The Hanged Man [DVD][2007] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)

You can tell the group has issues as facts slowly ooze out. Their reasons for killing themselves are exposed.

This is an interesting thriller with a twist or mystery. It is not a horror film. Robbyn Leigh provides the token eye candy.

Not for everyone. Part of a 30 Horror film collection. The hanged man in tarot cards is surrendering to a higher authority or greater good.

Parental Guide: No f-bombs. N-word. No nudity. Implied sex, rape.

People meet over a chat line. This is not very unique as people will do that. However this group forms a suicide pack lead by a mysterious chatterer named Dwarf Star.

They meet one at a time at a creepy old barn in the middle of nowhere, waiting for Dwarf Star to arrive. Things begin to happen as we hear creepy background music and each character start to unfold this/her secrets.

Immediately we think of classic stories like "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari"; there are cheesy flash backs or forwards or sideward to support the theme that this is a dream. Please do not make it a cheap knockoff of "The Eye" or some other cheep ghost story. Tell me it is a psychological thriller or something less sinister.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

5.0 out of 5 stars An impressive thriller with great depth and originality, 18 July 2011

Where would we be without indie filmmakers? The Hanged Man is a real gem of a film featuring - dare I say it? - some actual originality, a really impressive script, solid acting, and a story that actually develops rather than being obvious from the start. I can even report a rare sighting of actual character development here. Rarely have filmmakers done more with such a low budget (estimated at two hundred thousand dollars). Director Neil H. Weiss and writer Glenn B. Hopper III have done Tennessee-based Starbox Pictures proud with this effort.

Having expressed their suicidal thoughts to one another in a chat room, six tormented souls have assembled at a remote barn to kill themselves as a group. No one wants to die alone, and the de facto leader of the group, Dwarfstar, has promised to bring along some "magic juice" that does the job quickly and painlessly. There's just one problem - Dwarfstar is a no-show. Soco, the member of the party you would least like to meet in a dark alley, is all gung-ho to do what they came here to do, but the others convince him to wait to see if Dwarfstar shows up. It's an interesting group dynamic. Besides Soco, there is Spaceshot, a young and intelligent young woman; Miles, a young black man; X-Factor, a young black woman and something of a nurturer; LT56, a middle-aged, nervous type; and Flash, a loud and brash cowboy laughing his way to suicide. As the hours go by - and different external factors ratchet up the tension - we become privy to the actual men and women lying beneath the online facades of their first meeting. Deep secrets are revealed, and surprising plot changes drive the story toward an ending that does not disappoint.

The opening credits feature Tarot cards being laid out as if for a reading, and one can make the argument that each of the characters - and their fates - are represented among the cards. That is just one indication of this script's strength - when you reexamine what you've seen, the story coalesces even more tightly. The end result is not quite perfection, but The Hanged Man shows so much depth and refreshing originality that I find myself compelled to give it five stars.
