Worked for a bit then played silly buggers.
on 11 July 2011
I bought this to replace another wireless dongle which had worked fine for 18 months. I didn't want to do anything flashy with it - I just wanted to plug it in, install it, & for it to funnel router rays into my PC efficiently & without me having to think about the process. I plugged it in & installed it & it seemed to do just that for a couple of hours & I was pleased. At that point I would have given it 5 stars.
My system re-started itself because of a security update, or my connection dropped, or something, but I came back to the PC (Dell Dimension 9200 running XP) to find no connection & no way of connecting. I checked the hardware configuration & to my surprise the device had no drivers for it, apparently, so I re-installed it.
Let me cut a long & boring story short: every time I re-booted my PC, & often even if I did not, this device stopped working & the reason given was that it had no drivers installed, even though I'd run the installation programme several times. If I tried to install the utility program, it gave me the blue screen of death. & froze my whole PC, which I could only remedy by yanking the thing out of the USB slot. Nor could I isolate the drivers from the CD to have them ready on the desktop should I need them.
I'd read all the reviews, both positive & negative, & had assumed that the negative ones were down to people being unfamiliar with computers in general, or to the odd defective component, but my experience is that it worked intermittently for me but did not survive a re-boot or a dip in signal. The lights were working, my PC recognised it was there, but it simply stopped functioning properly. I have packed it ready to return to Amazon for what I am sure will be a swift refund. I could not recommend it at all; if you read the other negative reviews you will see similar experiences to mine, indicating that the essential set-up of the thing is flawed.
