Not 100,000 combinations!
on 20 October 2011
Seems like a sturdy lock, not tried it yet in the field.
I just wanted to note that it works by pushing, or toggling 5 buttons down, and then sliding the latch at the button of the lock to open it. NOT by pressing 5 buttons in the correct order.
This means that the buttons can be pushed in any order (since they are toggled), and the same button cannot be used twice.
So there is no "11111" combination, and "52147" would be the same as "12457" and "21457" and any thing else involving those digits. This heavily cuts down on the number of possible combinations to open this lock from 100,000 to 252.
Whilst it may still take someone a bit too long to sit there guessing 252 combinations, a regular 3 digit barrel lock has 1000 combinations, almost 4 times as many as this.
But then again, guessing 252 combinations would still require the person guessing to know that 5 digits are required, and how to use the lock in the first place.
