This box set contains 3 wonderful filmed Verdi operas which are probably the best examples of each opera available to buy. Domingo is in wonderful form in all of them, in spite of being a last minute replacement in 'Il Trovatore' but it didn't show! They also feature the best sopranos(Freni, Te Kanawa and Kabaivanska) and baritones of the era with Cappuccilli and Bruson two of the finest Verdi baritones in history and the amazing Fiorenza Cossotto, who was born to play the tormented gypsy Azucena. As an introduction to Verdi this set contains an early opera- 'Ernani', a middle opera -'Il Trovatore' and his late masterpiece -'Otello' so the viewer can appreciate how the style of his music changed with the period. It is said that 'Il Trovatore' needs to be staged with the four finest singers of the time and this was certainly the case with this production in 1978 in Vienna and it was conducted by Von Karajan! 'Otello' was a part Domingo 'owned' while he was singing it and this production was one of his finest, recorded with a superb cast and conducted by Solti in 1992 at Covent Garden. Domingo never liked to be the 'star', he preferred to be part of a brilliant ensemble and that is the case with these productions which feature some of the greatest opera performers in history.

This product is a must for all Plácido fans. You can see him from almost his starts in Ernani (his debut in La Scala) to Otello, his most important role, where his acting skills is splendid, amazing and wonderful. You wont regret if buy it. Trhee marvelous sesions of opera. And plus, llisten to him to speak about those parts it's something simply delicious, the way he lives every role it's incredible. Maybe it's that why he's the best.
