I bought this as a pure gadget out of interest. I installed it at the bottom of my garden well away from the house and the holder conveniently fits on an old broomstick about two foot above the ground level. I have been taking readings each morning to record in my diary an I am amazed how much rain we have had, I had no idea. the ground is saturated at the present and I am not surprised with rainfall of 3.5 to 4 inches per month.

Unlike some similar home rain gauges, this needs you to make your own stick to stand it up, but no hardship, and you get to choose the height convenient for yourself. Order executed by ETI was just fine. The one I bought included the accumulator/memory scale around the top at lower price thanm some competitors were offering without the accumulator/memory. The accumulator/memory involves just carrying forward your running total from previous reading/emptying by turning the loose fit ring on top relative to a marker on the clear plastic section (it is easily knocked out of position, so not a serious proposition for accumulating your records over a period).

I purchased this item as a stop gap until I was able to find another device. I now have an electronic automatic radio rain gauge. Both independent devices agree the measured amount over the twenty four hour period provided not too much rain falls. Unfortunately in heavy prolonged down pours the ETI gauge suffers losses which I attribute to splash over as the chamber fills up, (typically 40mm and above) Water evaporation is a problem in a warm weather conditions which would give false reading. This device is only suitable for the casual rain fall collector.
months later I can report that this item has good reliable rain fall monitoring and has never let me down it's readings compare very accruately with an electronic device i also have alongside which relays the rain fall measurments to a base station indoors.

Apart from having to find a post to put it on (an old broom handle worked perfectly!), it is an excellent gauge. Having it off the ground does help (as my puppy kept on trying to lift the old one on the ground up and chew it!). Also much easier to see the amount of rainfall. Well made and hope it lasts.

Thanks for the accumulator/memory in another review, I did not know what it was.

For the price this is a well made product, I don't know how it compares to my WS1081 yet but 25mm of accumulation from another collector yields 15mm in this gauge but weighs in at 67g and measures 70mm on a graduated cylinder.

When I pour this accumulation into my WS1081's rain collector it says 9mm of precipitation. I bought it because I seem to be getting more rain than either official station near me, like two miles away and I'm in between the two.

I'll often have massive accumulations, both electronic [which can be activated by wind, bird or animals] and physical collectors.

I'd buy one again.

Quite impressed with this rain gauge - it is much more substantial than the one it replaces that had a thin spike on the bottom which I ever feared breaking. This one sits comfortably in a supporting ring which in turn fits over a broom-handle sized pole (not included). Also very good is the easy to read scale with big bold markings and numbers. The ring on the top which I gather is to record the accumulated readings however is of no use as turns if you so much as look at it, but it does at least provide some protection for the rim.

Does the job well with a clear easy to read scale. Rainfall can be very local and my garden can be quite different to the official Met Office station only a few miles away. The guage loses a star for the mounting which fits only loosely to a round broom handle and needs a drilled hole to screw it to it so that the whole lot does not come off wnen emptying the guage. Having said that you won't find a better one at the price or anywhere near it.

Arrived on time, well packed, and in good condition. It's apparently made mostly of a polycarbonate type material, so even the post couldn't break it. Cheap polystyrene ones crack easily and then the weather gets in and they leak. I managed to drop it a couple of times while fitting it up, and it just bounced. This augers well for frost resistance.
My only problems with it are as others have said, it has two clear easy to read scales, but they're both metric, and fixing it requires scrounging a broom handle sized lump of dowel or pipe. I used some bits of old plumbing, and improvised. Also the ring on top for adding up different periods' rainfall is more ornamental than useful, as it slips at a touch. I suppose you could tighten it up somehow. I'm not going to bother.
If you're not handy and don't have a shed full of tools and junk to play with, then maybe this is not for you. Otherwise, it's probably as good as you'll get at the price, and as much as you'll need for basic fun meteorology.

I bought two to make a comparison between two sites. Everything fine so far and I am pleased with them. I used old metal plant supports to mount them and they fit perfectly. It's easy to read the gauge and empty it.It took me a little while to work out that the dial along the top rim was for keeping a running total as the gauges didn't come with any instructions! I am wondering now what will happen in the winter when we get heavy snow.
