I picked this up after watching Ken Loach's 'Poor Cow' and was not disappointed. Set in the 18th century, it's a kind of 'Dickensian' story (if I can say that) about a boy who gets tied up with a convicted felon, Frenchman 'Black Jack'. During the course of their travels, the boy rescues a girl his age en route to a madhouse and later they join up with a traveling...

That poor boy... He could have done better I am sure, if only someone had told him what "acting" really is about... Then instead of showing (that's what a director does, right?) how Black Jack managed to cheat the hangman, Ken Loach introduces a narrator who has to tell us. It's such a lovely book, with the gloriously happiest ending ever, but the film - though not...

I picked this up after watching Ken Loach's 'Poor Cow' and was not disappointed. Set in the 18th century, it's a kind of 'Dickensian' story (if I can say that) about a boy who gets tied up with a convicted felon, Frenchman 'Black Jack'. During the course of their travels, the boy rescues a girl his age en route to a madhouse and later they join up with a traveling circus. It becomes something of an adventure love story. The acting and dialogue feels very authentic and the story is interesting and fast paced. With the exception of one or two scenes in which I failed to believe the logic or character motivation, this is a fun movie that ought to charm your socks off.

This is one of the best films made. It has an amateur tone that really makes the film, and is totally realistic. The skill of the Director and Producer has made this film very absorbing and entertaining. Highly recommended. I am very pleased that this film has at last been made into DVD. The only thing that spoils it is the small Director's cuts in the DVD (that were not in the VHS) - that were not needed.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing., 4 Jan 2012

Being a keen fan of Ken Loach, I was perhaps expecting too much of this film.
However, I found the acting abysmal, the sound quality poor, and I felt very uninvolved. Not one of his best works.
