Ideally Brass Bands are at their best when playing traditional music such as folk songs and classical themes.
Thankfully this is mainly what's here apart from a few songs from Tin Pan Alley.
Thankfully no 76 Trombones or Col Bogey
The booklet gives a brief history of brass bands and is quite interesting especially about the Paul McCartney link which mentions the fact that the Black Dyke Mills Band made a single for the Apple label of Thingumybob custom written by McCartney for a TV series of that name in 1968 and starring Stanley Holloway. It was coupled with a version of Yellow Submarine. In the mid 70s the Black Dyke Mills Band turned up again for the final Wings album Back To The Egg and played on Winter Rose.
It was not the first time Lennon & McCartney had been the subject of brass bands as there was Marching To The Beatles in the mid 60s which has been reissued on CD.
A version of Yesterday is played here by the Brittania Building Society Band but fits in well with the collection of traditional songs

Certain things that are here are five star quality. First the bands - Berner Oberland Brass Band, Black Dyke , BT, Corey, CWS Glasgow, Fodens, Grimethorpe Colliery, Hammonds Sauce Works, Hendon, Sellers Engineering, Williams Fairey Engineering, Britannia Building Society and Yorkshire Building Society.(some names are now changed). Second the music of these lands - Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England. These tunes represent the best of the tradition. There are some five star solos, including euphonium, cornet and trombone among others. So what is my niggle with this double CD of 30 great tracks? It is this - for me the best of these recordings convey passion and power, some of the weaker tracks simply purr. The title of the collection is 'Land of Hope and Glory' - some of the arrangements and some of the performances portray 'Land of Hopeless Nostalgia and Snoring' So buy this double CD and discover the wonderful best and discard the Hovis worst.

This is an excellent album with 15 tracks on each CD. There is variety in both the bands and the types of music. The notes are useful and interesting, although it would have been good to know the date of each recording.

Something to stir the musical soul, and keep your feet tapping at the same time. If you are of a certain age, and can remember days spent at Park bandstands, this is for you. Enjoyable to the last note.

A good 2CD album, all the old standards are there, Scottish, Irish, Welsh and English traditional music, and few popular classics and (in my view, oddly) A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square, Yesterday and The Very thought of You, perhaps I think 'oddly' because I loathe all three tracks. The bands are as divers as the content - whether the Halifax Choral Society is from Halifax town or the building society I have no idea, but they're a pleasant addition on a couple of tracks. I like to back my 'scenery' photographs on DVD with brass band music, it's truly grand music. This album gives me lots to choose from and will be well used, I'm sure.
