Probably the first true anthology of Brass Bands
on 2 May 2012
Ideally Brass Bands are at their best when playing traditional music such as folk songs and classical themes.
Thankfully this is mainly what's here apart from a few songs from Tin Pan Alley.
Thankfully no 76 Trombones or Col Bogey
The booklet gives a brief history of brass bands and is quite interesting especially about the Paul McCartney link which mentions the fact that the Black Dyke Mills Band made a single for the Apple label of Thingumybob custom written by McCartney for a TV series of that name in 1968 and starring Stanley Holloway. It was coupled with a version of Yellow Submarine. In the mid 70s the Black Dyke Mills Band turned up again for the final Wings album Back To The Egg and played on Winter Rose.
It was not the first time Lennon & McCartney had been the subject of brass bands as there was Marching To The Beatles in the mid 60s which has been reissued on CD.
A version of Yesterday is played here by the Brittania Building Society Band but fits in well with the collection of traditional songs
