4.0 out of 5 stars John Butler for mainstream, but still awesome, 10 April 2010
This review is from: April Uprising (Audio CD)
I've been waiting for April Uprising since Grand National (and boy its taken it's sweet time). First listen and first impressions of this was that it is only an 'ok' album. By most bands standards this would be an absolute pearler of a record, but i think we've been spoilt by previous JBT efforts. This album sees a lot more of a pop edge for radio play, and feels a bit like JBT have lost 'some' of their charm because of it, and it feels more like an alternative rock album, as opposed to the rootsy vibe of sunrise or three.

It is NOT a bad album by any means. There is still some awesome songwriting on here and thought has been put into the lyrics (see Look like you) so not all has been lost, but it seems the complex guitar work has been swapped for more subdued riffs, which are still pretty cool (although i'd much prefer to hear some slide back in the days of treat yo mama or something like what Martin Harley band are doing - who are a brilliant roots blues british band - check out grow your own by them). I personally felt this way about Grand National when it was first released, but it grew on me tremondoudly as time went on, and the more i've listened to it, the more it has grown on me, as has April Uprising.

If your expecting a step backwards to the old skool JBT, then this will not be a record for you, but if you enjoy good music, played with more talent, heart and soul than 99% of other 'artists' (term used loosely) , and can accept this record for what it is, then you'll love it.

Hope this helps y'all, I would recommend buying it

This album is, in its entirety, AMAZING!! I actually didn't have too high hopes for it as had read some not too hot reviews of the album before i got it but oh my god, how wrong they were!! Love love love everything about this album, saw them in concert just as it was released and they rocked - john butler and his magic hand - was something to see.

I love JBT live, but ive always thought that their albums never truely capture that passion and spirit that the envoke when they perform; dont get me wrong their previous albums are awesome!

BUT, this album is the best studio creation they've ever done; its incredible to listen to! Some chilled out, some hard rock and some funky tunes to dance to...

PERFECT FOR SUMMER!

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb album, 10 Oct 2012

Got quite a few previous albums and seen them a few times live (if you thought the recorded versions were good, just wait...). First listen was not too positive, but it didn't take long for me to appreciate the usual JBT traits are alive and well. Musicianship and Song writing in abundance. A few tracks are a bit more rock n roll than usual, but there are also foot tappers interspersed among them. Excellent!

dear lord, i loved this album right from the word go. Ive got all the JBT releases since three and first heard his music when I was in Oz in 2004. Each album keeps getting better as does his song writing skills, there's plenty of guitar work in there but its not full of twiddly nonsense. Catchy choons you can belt from your window knowing that it will never get played on Radio One, and thank god too.

peace.
