4.0 out of 5 stars A worthy pocket snapper
This is (at the time of writing) a new addition to the Nikon Coolpix range - it is a very slim and well built camera that can easily be carried in your pocket without you even noticing it. 3.0 out of 5 stars Not great
I bought this camera based on the good reviews but I am really disappointed with the quality of the images. All the portraits come out blury and the skin appears all "waxy". I have tried to take the portraits on the automatic mode to remove the smooth effect on the skin but it doesn't work.

This review is from: Nikon - Coolpix S4000 - Digital camera - compact - 12.0 Mpix - optical zoom: 4 x - supported memory: SD, SDHC - black (Electronics)
This is (at the time of writing) a new addition to the Nikon Coolpix range - it is a very slim and well built camera that can easily be carried in your pocket without you even noticing it. Despite its small scale the Coolpix S4000 sports a large, clear, touch-screen with a minimal number of other controls, although, predictably, the screen is a bit of a "finger-print magnet". The touch-screen interface gives the user control over many of the functions and settings of the camera but, essentially, it is a camera that is designed to work either in automatic or user defined "scene mode" - there is very limited manual control of aperture and shutter speed etc. The face tracking seems to work well and the 720P HD movie capability is also useful for short clips but no substitute for a dedicated videocam - although the S4000's zoom can be used during movie filming. Sound during movies is not a strong point - the microphone, although forward facing, seems slightly feeble.

The photgraphic results from the S4000 are good in well-lit conditions and nearer to adequate when shooting in lower light and/or using the built in flash. Like other cameras of this type (e.g. small format with a high megapixel count) the lower the ambient light level the greater the incidence of noise, however, within its class the results are, in my view, quite acceptable. The autofocus is quick and effective and pictures are generally crisp with accurate colours.

There are a couple quirks that potential purchasers should be aware of;
- Oddly you can only charge the battery whilst in the camera with the supplied Nikon charger (although it can also be charged via USB)- however, you can buy a cheap 3rd party charger to charge the battery externally to the camera.
- Secondly, you can only select "superfine mode" e.g. less JPEG compression in conjunction with pictures taken at full 12 MP resolution - this is at odds with other cameras I have used where you can determine the size and compression level of pictures independently - not a huge issue but strange.

Overall, this camera is designed as a pocketable snapper, it isn't fair to compare it with DSLRs etc. on the basis of cost or size, and, seen in that context, the Nikon Coolpix S4000 represents good quality and value.

The camera is not made to take quick pictures, specially on 12 megapixels, you have a to wait like 30 seconds to be able to take another shoot which is very inconvenient.
In the future I will stick to Cannon.
