Almost persuaded an old luddite like me

Let's get things straight; as a psychologist I'm not a great fan of NLP. Indeed, some of what we are told as "fact" by NLP practitioners is mere tosh that has been dis-proven in several reliable scientific studies. Having said that, there is "something" in NLP - some of which has some validity. So I approached this book with caution and scepticism. It is clearly written by someone who is an ardent believer in NLP and who is presenting you with a "system" of persuading people to your point of view. Rarely do such systems actually work for everyone - though clearly they do for many people. What always works is good, solid, communication with everything said "from the heart". Passion for your subject is more persuasive than following so-called patterns of language.
However, dig deep into this book and you discover that between the "patterns" and "systems", the author is actually asking you to do what comes naturally for most people. Where the book will succeed is in people who lack confidence and thereby limit their natural communication skills. If they can be provided with a system that then demonstrates it produces the goods, they will probably end up being better natural communicators and better at persuading people of their point of view. As such, this book therefore provides a valuable role.
It did not persuade me that NLP was right - but then it did not set out to do that. What it provides is clear, well-written guidelines on how to use NLP techniques in getting your message across, so that your point of view wins the day. Each technique is presented in easy-to-follow instructions, with relevant exercises clearly laid out. It is easy to read and delivers what it says. But it left me still doubtful about the whole arena of NLP itself. That said, the author is clearly passionate for the subject, which means I'm almost persuaded - but not quite.
