4.0 out of 5 stars I was pleasantly surprised by this very good CD, 1 April 2010

I was a bit wary of this CD because when I've heard Mose in recent years I'd thought that his voice had gone but here he seems on good form, in good voice and playing the piano well. The songs, a mixture of new and old, covers and reworkings, are generally OK if not up to the high standard of his own classic compositions - although Loudon Wainwright's "I'm alright" sounds as though it was written by Mose! One of the best things about the CD is Joe Henry's excellent sympathetic production, which subtly expands Mose's aural landscape, adding guitar and sax, but is totally in keeping with his back catalogue. A very good record that sees Mose breaking new ground but within the parameters of his own charming, unique sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Young Man Mose stole the Blues, Old Man Mose still has it!, 24 Mar 2010
This review is from: The Way Of The World (Audio CD)
At last! New work from the often much underrated artist Mose Allison. Mose stands for strong lyrics (always with a witty touch), unique colored voice and own style piano playing. His songs make me happy, smile, think and sing. All you need in life. He is genuine and so is his music. This new album has all of this "Moseness" but also sounds remarkably fresh with a lot of little musical surprises to be discovered while listening. The album also has a nice sort of calm over it and is even in the large catalogue of Mose Allison again a unique work. The sweet and intelligent songs will make you happy! One of Mose's best!

4.0 out of 5 stars His last recording., 2 Feb 2014

"The Way Of The World", recorded in 2009, is - and may remain - Mose Allison's last recording. By this time he had passed 80 and is sounding a little frail on some of these cuts; his voice is shot, basically - nonetheless the playing and timing is still all there and the band (which included Greg Leisz) is fine. There seems to be some intent to change Mose's usual sonic setting, in perhaps a similar way as the last Johnny Cash records but not as pronounced. The opening track is a total steal, and I laughed out loud - obvious but I'm not about to give it away. There are some pretty good numbers on this CD including a very powerful piano outing with the rhythm section absolutely following him note-for-note, the truly world-weary title tune and what I think is the ultimate version of 'Let It Come Down', the song inspired by Banquo's murderer's line in 'Macbeth'. But (IMO) Greg Leisz is under-used throughout the recording.
The only thing is....the last track which is a duet with his daughter Amy, herself a singer/songwriter...does she always sound like that?
As I am a big Mose Allison fan I had to buy this. It's not his best album and if you only want one Mose record don't get this one. However it is the sign-off after over a half-century of music making.

WEell Mose does it agin, although this time maybe a bit mellower! Give it some time and it grows on you. The music and the lyrics are as rich as ever.

If you like Mose, you'll love this CD. From the first chords, it is Mose at his best. Slightly short at only 35 minutes, just have to go and see him on his tour.
