4.0 out of 5 stars not as bad as I thought
Just finished watching season 9 & was not looking forward to it based on what i've heard & some reviews!
I actually thought it was not that bad, Brandon going was very low key I thought, also didn't think I would miss Val, but her & Kelly's sparring couldn't be beaten! Dylan coming back was good and as for Gina!!! Every episode resulted in her & Dylan arguing, getting...

3.0 out of 5 stars The Beginning of the End

Very early on, in fact by the fifth episode Brandon makes his departure, which is quickly followed by Valerie all of two episodes later.

It really is the parting of these two characters that lets the series down. Although we did get the return of Dylan McKay all of five minutes after Valerie's exit, this is the only redeeming feature. After this we get oddly rehashed storylines, but with clones of Brandon (Matt) and Valerie (Gina).

Dylan coming back was good and as for Gina!!! Every episode resulted in her & Dylan arguing, getting back together, arguing again........that became very tedious don't like her character AT ALL!
All in all did enjoy this series & it ended on one of the best cliff hangers I think we've had out of all the different seasons! Looking forward to series 10

3.0 out of 5 stars disappointing, 18 July 2010
This review is from: Beverly Hills 90210 - Season 9 [DVD] (DVD)
This is by far the most disappointing season of the show.
With Brandon and Val gone and Dylan's comeback (and with him the never-ending love triangle between him, Kelly and Matt (who was supposed to make us forget Brandon), the show is really getting tedious and full of déja-vus!).
I didn't remember anything about this season and now I know why: it isn't worth watching at all!
The only reason for me to buy season 10 is to see Donna and David get married...

3.0 out of 5 stars running out of steam, 30 Jun 2010

This review is from: Beverly Hills 90210 - Season 9 [DVD] (DVD)
season 9 of 90210 is a bittersweet one to watch back... whilst it is fun to watch the gang of friends we know and love grow and develop as young adults, there is an unavoidable sense that the show is finally running out of steam and really needs to call it a day at last...

this season sees the departure of two of the shows biggest characters... jason priestley bows out as Brandon in episode 5 and Val follows suit two episodes later... frankly, these two are huge losses... i think the show could have survived better the loss of other long term characters ...

Brandon was always the moral anchor of the show, the grounded, reliable one- kinda the father figure for the group... in a way it was kinda a relief to see an end to the Brandon and Kelly saga, but once Dylan returns and the Dylan and Kelly saga gets going again... it becomes clearer that the show is just retreading old ground over and over again and it wasn't just time for Brandon to move on but maybe the whole show....

Val was another huge loss... she always injected a sense of fun with her bitchy antics but she always showed a vulnerable side to redeem her too... her abuse storyline finally comes to an end before her departure...

Val and Brandon are poorly cloned this season... Matt takes on the batton of quarreling with Kelly over moral issues week in, week out now that Brandon is gone, Matt also has to battle Dylan for Kelly's affections just as Brandon often did in the past. Val is replaced by a dead ringer for her- personality and looks-wise... Gina, Donna's bitter and begrudging cousin arrives to stir trouble and dabble with Dylan just as Val had in the past...

It just feels jaded the show this year... Donna is on-off with Noah all season, Noah becomes almost as annoying as Dylan- all that self-loathing over his dad renders him much less likeable than he was last season, Steve and Janet finally get together and are a perfect match, a fun couple- one smart move by the writers this year and David continues to dabble with his music, dj-ing career...

overall, there is a sense that the writers have run out of real ideas for the show...of course, it still deals with social issues frequently but it just seems so watered down from its heyday in the early nineties... truly, the producers should have called it a day after season 8, of course, they wanted to get the full ten seasons... but really, the show had done all it could at this stage and it was pointless going on.. still, there are odd moments/ episodes that are enjoyable to watch... but ultimately, matt was never going to replace Brandon, Gina wouldn't make us forget Val and Dylan as a special guest star... ugh, i had forgetten how irritating his moodiness and self-pitying were, previously it was his dad he moped relentlessly over, now it was his wife... ugh, i wished he had stayed away....

in summation, this season is certainly one for the die- hard fans, not for those that lost interest after it's hey day in seasons 1-5.
