5.0 out of 5 stars Dazzling social history
This is an exemplary social history of Britain in the six years after World War 11, dazzling in its scope and impressive in its detail.

It covers the impact of the War and its aftermath on most major aspects of British society: class, health, crime, sport, culture (high and low), work, play, leisure, politics, race, the mass media and much more...

3.0 out of 5 stars Have your Thesaurus at the ready!
I bought the whole trilogy of 'A New Jerusalem' so I could read a modern history work about the period of my own Childhood (born 1946). Whilst I enjoyed the book, I found it very difficult to read. David Kynaston is very much an academic and you will probably need a thesaurus/dictionary by your side to translate many of his words, and I have an 'A' Level in English!! This...

2.0 out of 5 stars Massively disappointing, 18 Jan. 2015
By
I expected so much from this book having seen so many positive reviews. What I found was something that reads like a Ph.D thesis, heavy, low readability and trapped in verbatim quotes from mass-observation surveys. You end not being able to see the wood for the trees. I struggled through to the end of Book 1 then gave up.

5.0 out of 5 stars An interesting insight, 29 July 2014

For one born in the late 50's this book gives an honest picture of post war Britain. Lots of the names and bills it contains are now or were well known. It charts many of the mid sixties politicians early days as MPs

The copy i purchased was in fine condition and it arrived quickly after making the order. Along with his other book - Family Britain- it gives a superb account of a momentous period in contemporary british history.

A thorough and perceptive account of life after the War. This was a different world a harsh ,class ridden time but with a genuine community feeling that remains in my memory as a warm glow.

This book, and its successor 'Family Britain', are the best social history of the 40s and 50s ever featuring Mass Observation comments from a variety of ordinary and later famous contributors

This is a great book. I learned so much about the background to the birth of the NHS and the Town and Country planning act. All the contemporary quotes wonderful.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Complete Circle - Austerity Britain, 31 Dec. 2010
A Kid's Review
A somewhat over wordy, book where chunks of it are just plain boring unless you are deeply into the political background of the era. Some very interesting and enlightening well researched information regarding the reaction of the populace to the strictures imposed by the Labour government post war - particular interesting as it seems the "wheel has turned full circle" to the position the UK currently finds itself in ! Would suggest this book would be a valuable source of information and warning to the current Government which has the business of "rebuilding" a shambles and potentially bankrupt State without losing the respect and confidence of the people. "Austerity Britain" demonstrates just how amazing it is comparing today's standards to those of the late 40's early 50s and how people "stuck" together for the common good - or did they ???? Not quite what I expected, but seems accurate as it talles with my (young) experiences of those times and adds considerable background. Illuminating.
