there was a slight feeling of sadness when i was watching this, george formby's final film. after entertaining millions thoughout the 1930s and 1940s and being top of the british box office, here it is, formby's swansong, entitled "george in civvy street."
this was a better comedy than i expected, being formby's last. there is a lot of location work that was filmed for this production and in my opinion, this adds to the film as it wisely avoids being studio-bound.
the plot is a fairly simple one but that works well here. george and his best friend, are demobbed and are ready to settle down at formby's old country pub. however, business hasn't been too good as a rival pub in the same village has been stealing the trade by using unfair tactics. in addition, the rivals are determined to finish off george's pub once and for all, by using various sneaky methods to oust him.
as with all of his previous films, our george is equally determined that this won't happen as he and his friends take up the challenge and fight the baddies all the way to the film's end. one last time, the writers deliver the goods as the dialogue includes some funny lines and george also contributes with some fine songs and his usual slapstick.
a thoroughly engaging film which should impress many a formby fan, in that he has finished his film career on a relative high and that he has left behind a legacy of classic british comedy that is virtually unrivalled.

"George in Civvy Street" is a rather poignant film for me, yet still enjoyable. Mr Formby's popularity endured throughout the war years, enabling the singer/actor to retain a role in several film productions. However at war's end, the public were looking elsewhere for their cinematic fun, and good old George had served his purpose, and became a thing of the past! Still, "Civvy Street" has all the classic Formby moment's and that's good enough for me. Long Live George, the King of the "Toothy grin" and Uke!
