4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good gothic / black metal, 27 Oct 2006

I first became interested in Moonspell after I heard "Alma Mater" and "Vampiria", which is why I decided to buy this album. These are the 2 best songs on the album, but there are no bad songs and the whole thing is worth a listen. Moonspell's music is in somewhat the same vein as Cradle of Filth's earlier music: gothic metal with some black metal leanings. Several of the songs utilise more melodic techniques such as female vocals (particularly on "Love Crimes") and keyboards. "Wolfshade" is one of the best songs on the album with a fantastic riff and a great atmosphere. "Vampiria" is a fairly self explanatory gothic masterpiece with haunting vocals and a fantastically catchy riff. "Alma Mater" remains one of Moonspell's most famous and popular songs, and for good reason. It's pretty heavy with amazing riffs and fantastic vocals, particularly the chorus which is sung in Moonspell's native language, Portuguese. Fernando's vocals are fairly awesome on the whole album, varying between ominous spoken sections, more typical black metal style screaming and surprisingly effective singing. He does have quite a strong Portuguese accent, but this is actually really cool. All the songs are sung in English apart from the odd, medieval/folk sounding "Trebaruna" and the chorus of "Alma Mater". On the whole, this is a really good album if you want to go back to the band's roots or if you are into gothic music at all. I would recommend them to fans of Cradle of Filth as well as they are similar in some ways.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Album by one of the greatest bands ever!, 6 Jan 2002
This review is from: Wolfheart (Audio CD)
This album captures Moonspell's early and raw energy in such a beautiful and mesmorising way. With stunning guitar solos, Fernando Ribeiro's sensational vocal power and amazing drumming this should not be missed by any fan of gothic or death metal music, infact anyone with taste. Both cheesy in a fun way and truly breath taking, this is one of the best albums ever.
Leagues ahead of crap like Craddle Of Filth buy this album now!

After I've lost My first issue of this album some time ago, I've bought it again and never regret this move. Sound of this remastered edition is nearly the same as original issue from '90. The same power, richness and dynamics. Definitely the most melodic album made by Portuguese lads. U can listen to it endlessly without any signs of tiredness, each time discovering something more. Will recommend to everybody.

Moonspell's best effort up tp date!New album cover looks great too.Songs like Vampiria, An Erotic Alchemy and Alma Mater makes this album an epic and a must own. Moonspell moved away from the gothic style of music after this album. If you are starting to listen to Moonspell for the first time this should be your first album!

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic goth-metal, and Great Fun too!, 20 April 2001
This review is from: Wolfheart (Audio CD)
Moonspell are now fairly well known in the goth metal genre (see 'the butterfly effect'), but this was only their second album and to be brutally honest, it does show. None the less, their Portugese heritage combined with iron-maiden style goth music and cradle of filth lyrics ('I welcome you in my hole of desire') create music that is just brilliant fun to listen to, or chug along to on your (air-) guitar. If this is the digipack version, then it's also very well presented. Worth a look if nothing else.
