This review is from: Doan & Carstairs Mysteries, Book Two: The Mouse in the Mountain (The delightful mystery classic! 2) (Kindle Edition)
When Doan, a private-eye, wins Carstairs (an enormous pedigree Great Dane) in a card game it's a bit of a comedown for Carstairs. Carstairs makes this very clear to Doan and treats him with a certain amount of disdain. Although he appears not to be very bright, Doan is actually very astute and can be ruthless when the situation demands it.

The Mouse on the Mountain is set in Mexico in WWII - a beautiful heiress, a revolutionary, a young (female) teacher on an 'adventure', crooked police - murder and mystery follow Doan and Carstairs at every turn.

Doan's sardonic wit together with Carstairs superiority complex makes for a humorous read. Together they make an unstoppable team, getting into many scrapes before they finally solve the crime.

Doan and Carstairs are apparently 'Classic' novels, but I keep forgetting to Google when they were first published. The characters and private-eye storylines are 'noir-ish', but the Great Dane sidekick and the consistently humerous tone makes for more of a 'cafe-au-lait' read.
