5.0 out of 5 stars HOMAGE? RIP OFF? A STEP BACKWARDS OR A RETRO INSPIRED GEM?
3D Dot Game Heroes has raised a lot of questions and speculation from the gaming community. Can something this close to classic action RPG's like Zelda and its ilk really stand up in its own right amongst today's modern gaming fare, or is it just a rip off with no place in the modern world? Read on to find out more:

3.0 out of 5 stars Old game play, strange tastes
Maybe I wasn't the right kind of person for this kind of game, I never really grew up with games like Zelda so I couldn't see much of the charm behind this game. For what it's worth, creating a 3d sprite character was fun and the combat mechanics were somewhat challenging (again, never played zelda).

3.0 out of 5 stars A one note joke that wears thin quick, 13 Sept. 2010

Okay, so... it's basically a parody/homage to the old NES Zelda games, but 3DDGH is a little too outdated feeling in it's gameplay for it's own good. It's a single amusing joke that gets less funny as the game goes on, and boy does it go on, because I don't recall the old NES Zeldas taking a dozen hours to finish.

There's a lot to like here, sure, it is fun if you like your nostalgia served authentic, and the constant in-jokes about the excellent Demon's Souls(Made by the same team I believe) are hilarious if you've played DS beforehand, but ultimately, a one note joke is absolutely going to wear thin over the course of a dozen hours.

There really isn't a lot more to say, this is basically identical(Bar the visuals of course) to pre-Ocarina Zelda games in pretty much every way that matters. There are a lot of bells and whistles added on, but if you're more of a modern headed gamer, this will get extremely dull extremely quickly for you, so be sure you know what you're getting going in.

Fun idea, but way too niche for it's own good.

Got it as a gift, avid gamer boyfriend seemed pretty happy with it, spent an enjoyable morning watching him play it, and had a go myself. Very easy controls and objectives, map is a little off. No idea what else to say as not a gamer myself.
