Not bad but not living up to its potential
on 19 July 2010
Darker than Black throws around a lot of highly interesting ideas and kicks off with a compelling and mysterious opening episode, but after that I sadly felt it petered out. I went in expecting some kind of mystery or action anime and ended up with a series of 2 episode story arcs with little overarching relevance and the action sequences were few and far between.
The plot is based around a new dimension having opened on earth, replacing the stars with false ones corresponding to a "Contracter" a person with supernatural powers who must fulfill a certain obsessive behaviour after using his or her power. For instance one man must turn the corners of several pages of a book, while another simply has to smoke, yet some are more painful, such as cutting oneself or breaking a finger.
It's an incredible concept, with great potential, but I feel for the most part the series squandered such intrigue in a lot of oneshot stories that go nowhere. The ending epsiodes bring it in to a kind of close, but it takes a while to get there.
Perhaps I'm a victim of misconception. If you go into this series not expecting an action/ thriller then you might not be so disappointed, but personally I was.
Of note however, the english dub cast is very good, a rarity amongst anime these days, so give it a go even if you usually watch the japanese dub.
