Great little Camcorder
on 9 June 2010
Just returned from a fabulous trip to Iceland. Hadn't had the Legria HF R16 for very long before going , so didn't have a lot of time to practice with it. That said, I found it very easy just to use on Auto and pretty well point and shoot. Zoom is excellent, although a tripod would be better when using at full zoom to minimise shake (it can be very windy in Iceland). I used the hard drive to do a day's recording and then downloaded each day's footage to a Grade 6 SDHC card in case the hard drive got full which actually didn't happen, so I ended up with all my footage on the hard drive, backed up on the SDHC card (good for using with PC). To produce my own movie of the holiday I wanted to convert from HD to SD but if you use the camera facility to do this (very easy to do), the files are converted to the dreaded .MOD extension which I had already experienced with my JVC Everio. However I have found two very good software packages to produce .AVI files from either HD or SD footage, which I can then use with any video-making programmes such as Windows Movie Maker. Overall a neat, small and lightweight camcorder, producing very good results. Also has a very adequate built-in microphone. Have given 5 stars, even with the .MOD files problem, because most good camcorders use this format anyway. Surely it's time for the popular home video software packages to include .MOD file compatability.
