Just returned from a fabulous trip to Iceland. Hadn't had the Legria HF R16 for very long before going , so didn't have a lot of time to practice with it. That said, I found it very easy just to use on Auto and pretty well point and shoot. Zoom is excellent, although a tripod would be better when using at full zoom to minimise shake (it can be very windy in Iceland). I used the hard drive to do a day's recording and then downloaded each day's footage to a Grade 6 SDHC card in case the hard drive got full which actually didn't happen, so I ended up with all my footage on the hard drive, backed up on the SDHC card (good for using with PC). To produce my own movie of the holiday I wanted to convert from HD to SD but if you use the camera facility to do this (very easy to do), the files are converted to the dreaded .MOD extension which I had already experienced with my JVC Everio. However I have found two very good software packages to produce .AVI files from either HD or SD footage, which I can then use with any video-making programmes such as Windows Movie Maker. Overall a neat, small and lightweight camcorder, producing very good results. Also has a very adequate built-in microphone. Have given 5 stars, even with the .MOD files problem, because most good camcorders use this format anyway. Surely it's time for the popular home video software packages to include .MOD file compatability.

As a first time video camera owner, I find that this camera is easy to use, compact, light-weight and very portable. I always liked the idea of recording straight to memory card instead of dvd or a hard drive. I recommend the highest definition record setting, but this does seem to drain the battery quite quickly. With a bit of play back through the TV, and shooting video clips, a single charge may last about 45mins. Carrying a spare battery (and charger) around for longer clips or journeys, is a must. I will really enjoy this new purchase. ;o)

I chose the Canon Legria HF 16 after reading good reviews on picture Quality and I was not disappointed the colour and sharpness were brilliant. I liked the on/off button being located central to the back of the case rather than the more common top corner adjacent to the strap. This allows 'men sized hands' to easily hold the camera and apply the button with minimum shake, and to locate when in a hurry to use.
The camera looks and feels good and the menu tool bars easy to follow and format.
The disappointment arose with the noisy operation. There was a constant whirring noise when in basic mode and then when panning a further noise developed which sounded like a car diesel engine running. When this was played back through the TV the operational sounds over-laid the commentary. I sent the camera back and Amazon sent me a replacement this unfortunately was the same. Amazon service was brilliant and without fault. P.S. I also ordered a spare battery and this never arrived so all in all I am pretty fed up.

Why oh why to companies do this......why not simply let the product record information in a readily readable format instead of a format which can easily be played onto the tv, but then needs to be converted if it is going to be viewed on your pc or sent to the grand parents who are incapable of understanding that not all video files are the same.

The camera itself is great and does everything we asked of it. We got it so that we could record the joyous moments of our young daughter. So far she just stares at the camera and does nothing, but hey, you can bring a horse to water and not make it drink!

FOr the price its definitely worth buying!

Awesome camera. For outside filming and indoor filming with good light, it can't be beaten for the price. Auto Focus is immense and the number of settings make it very nimble and versatile.

I wanted a much lighter camcorder than the one I previously had (an old HI 8 Sony model). This is a fantastic product, light, sensitive and with a fantastic picture quality. Delighted with it.
