Mrs Bradley scents a mystery which she can really get her teeth into when she rents a house which belonged to an elderly lady who may or may not have been murdered. Bella Foxley who inherited the lady's money but not her house was later tried for the murder of her cousin and acquitted and committed suicide some time later because of anonymous letters accusing her of all sorts of things. Mrs Bradley wants to offer short holidays to the inmates of the local approved school and with that end in mind she tracks down two boys who have escaped but not been found until she tackles the problem.

But the mystery of whether or not Bella Foxley murdered her aunt starts to take over and she goes off to interview all the people involved who are still alive. Her search includes an apparently haunted house and a selection of people who appear to have secrets which they do not want the indefatigable Mrs Bradley to discover. Unfortunately for them trying to hide something from her is like trying to hide a bone from a dog.

I really enjoyed this book and found myself so engrossed in it I read three quarters of it in an evening. It is a marvellously complex plot with some brilliant and believable characters including Derek, Mrs Bradley's grandson and her son and daughter-in-law Ferdinand and Caroline. If you like your crime with a fair amount of psychology mixed in and with very little violence on the page you will enjoy Gladys Mitchell's crime novels which really stand the test of time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mrs bradley rules, 26 Feb 2013

When i first saw diana rigg as mrs bradley some years ago i read all the books i could find. This one got away. When you finish reading the books you feel like you have really accomplished a good read and that your brain gas had good workout. Excellent story, great characters, brilliant little red herrings and i hope i am as nimble when i reach old age. Of course working out mrs bradley' s exact age is challenging to say the least.
I particularly like the fact that i didnt guess who did it!
A really great book for someone with more than half a brain, who finds modern crime miserable and dreary. Not a pump- action shot gun in sight.
I now have to go back to the beginning and read them all again.

This is one of the best Gladys Mitchells - if you don't like "ordinary" detective novels this is a must try. Will you work out the killer ? Very unlikely - does Mrs Bradley get threatened with violence - yes - I wouldn't take her on....

A good holiday read but I found it difficult to relate to which era it was set in especialy after the TV Series which was in the 1920's or 1930's.
