5.0 out of 5 stars EMI Hugo Wolf Anniversary Edition Box
I think it would be very churlish not to give 5* to this EMI boxed set as it contains most of the Hugo Wolf most people would ever need at a very modest price. But, what is in the box?

CD1 was released in 1996 and features Dawn Upshaw, Olaf Bar, and Helmut Deutsch. This CD has the Italienisches Liederbuch in sparkling performances, an excellent modern choice in...

1.0 out of 5 stars Faulty Disc
This set has all the wonderful aspects that the other reviewers mention, BUT THERE IS A BIG SNAG FOR NOW. I have returned the set today as the first CD is faulty, and will only run on a computer, not stand-alone equipment. The replacement which also arrived today has the same fault on the same disc. I am not going to return this one as I can run it via my media PC but...

This CD has the Italienisches Liederbuch in sparkling performances, an excellent modern choice in this repertoire compared to Fischer-Dieskau and Schwarzkopf. The original release was Wolf;Italienisches Liederbu.

CD2 and most of CD 3 contain Anne Sophie von Otter and Olaf Bar in early 1990s recordings of the Spanisches Liederbuch with Geoffrey Parsons on piano. Although this recording was re-released a few years ago on EMI's "double forte" imprint (now deleted), the original release was Spanish Songbook (Von Otter, Bar, Parsons). The rest of CD3 has bits of a 1992 Virgin Classics release by Thomas Allen and Geoffrey Parsons in the form of the Goethe-Lieder. This was originally released as Wolf: Lieder / Thomas Allen, Geoffrey Parsons.

CD4 comes from as recently as 2006 and has Ian Bostridge and Antonio Pappano with some Eichendorff-Lieder, Morike-Lieder, and "Gutmann und Gutweib" and "Ganymed" from the Goethe-Lieder. The original release was Lieder (Bostridge, Pappano).

CD5 gives us recordings from the 1950s and 1960s featuring Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Gerald Moore with a selection of Goethe-Lieder, the 6 Lieder fur eine Frauenstimme, Sechs alte Weisen, and a couple of other songs. This CD is part of the 2-CD set EMI released in the "Great Recordings of the Century" series in 2007 Wolf: Lieder, which is well-worth having, by the way.

CD6 is given over to Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Gerald Moore in recordings from 1959 and 1960 of Eichendorff-Lieder, "Miscellaneous Settings" and Lieder nach Michelangelo Buonarroti. This CD seems to be a fresh compilation of Fischer-Dieskau's brilliant old recordings.

CD7 contains the rest of Thomas Allen's Virgin Classics release, Olaf Bar in 10 Morike-Lieder from 1986, with Fischer-Dieskau from the late 1950s rounding things up.

CD8 is also a compilation of Dietrich-Fischer Dieskau in the Goethe-Lieder, Helen & Klaus Donath from 1976 in 3 Morike-Lieder, Brigitte Fassbender in 2 songs and Monika Frimmer sings Lied vom Winde with Liese Klann from 1992.

The attractively presented box contains a CD-ROM with the sung texts and a booklet with good, concise notes from Richard Stokes.

None of the recordings contained in the box are less than excellent and this superb EMI compilation is highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love it., 1 Jan 2011
This review is from: The Wolf Edition - 150th Anniversary (Audio CD)
Dirt cheap, buy it. Wolf was a legend ('Wenn du, mein Liebster, steigst zum Himmel auf'). If you like (not love!?) Wagner - go for it. These CDs were previously hard to get cheaply.

1.0 out of 5 stars Faulty Disc, 31 Oct 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Wolf Edition - 150th Anniversary (Audio CD)
This set has all the wonderful aspects that the other reviewers mention, BUT THERE IS A BIG SNAG FOR NOW. I have returned the set today as the first CD is faulty, and will only run on a computer, not stand-alone equipment. The replacement which also arrived today has the same fault on the same disc. I am not going to return this one as I can run it via my media PC but I advise potential buyers NOT TO BUY for now until it is confirmed that you are buying from a clean batch with the fault rectified.
