I have a slew of Writers' 'How to' books. Now, having bought 'Immediate Fiction', by Jerry Cleaver, I find that most, if not all of the information on my bookshelves, is contained in this one, concise, engaging text. Other writing experts have sometimes tended to scare me with dire warnings about 'premise', 'theme' and other mysterious abstracts, that will make for good fiction. Jerry Cleaver though renders it all down to a simple formula, which really isn't a 'formula' at all. It is in truth the simple definition of the main aspect in fiction. 'Story-telling'. This is a source book that any struggling fiction writer has probably prayed for. Jerry Cleaver not only shows you how to do it, he even gives you an idea, and the guidance to push that idea wherever your muse desires. Once you have read 'Immediate Fiction', test its teachings by analysing the work of any great story-teller whom you admire. Then you will see 'Immediately' that this book shows things how they should be shown. Better yet, it could get you writing the kind of fiction that makes people glad they can read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most practical book on story telling, ever., 27 Nov 2010

This review is from: Immediate Fiction (Paperback)
Very interesting book on writing and the story telling process. Lays out what makes a good, satisfying story in a very simple way and without the usual waffle you get in creative writing books. The structure works well with most types of fiction and makes it all much easier to grasp. Its inspired me to write again which is some achievment in itself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Possible availability problem, 10 Nov 2005

Although I have not read this book yet, I am certainly looking forward to doing so. This is just a warning to anyone ordering the book around now (Nov 2005) that I have been waiting for two months for it to arrive so far (the delivery date in the order-tracking page keeps getting further and further away). Whilst I am sure that Amazon are doing their utmost to obtain a copy, I just wanted to let any people also wanting this book to be aware of the possible difficulties.
