A wonderful Zen proverb says that "when the student is ready, the teacher will appear." This highly readable account of a Russian peasant in search of pure prayer crossed my path at just the right time. We readers follow the peasant's journey after he hears St. Paul's exhortation to "pray without ceasing." Through monastery and village, through rain and warmth, he follows that hunger that we all feel for a purposeful life, for a deeper awareness of the Divine in our mundane lives. The Way of a Pilgrim mustn't be read only once, but savored and mined with re-reads. The book offers a glimpse through one doorway that leads to a new life -- The Jesus Prayer.

This book gives the entertaining tale of a pilgrim who wanted to know how one can pray ceaslessly as the Bible says. He is led to the "Jesus Prayer." The book tells of his travels through Russia. It is very entertaining. But this book is much more than that. The latter part of the book gives a dialouge between the pilgrim, a priest and a monk. The priest and the monk tell the pilgrim, that one need only pray and nothing else. Prayer alone will help and direct a person on the right path. They then show him how to pray the Jesus Prayer. In this little book is a complete course in theology. Why? Because by prayer alone one can find all knowledge and wisdom from God. Without a doubt, this book belongs in the top five of the greatest religious books ever written. This edition of the book, gives very good instructions on how to pray the Jesus Prayer, which is an easy prayer to do.

There is a huge amount in this book, you really need to read it slowly to digest what it has to say. Bear in mind that it is a translation and that it is getting on a bit, and the phraseology doesn't seem to flow as well as it should (hence the 4* rating). I would certainly be quite interested to see a more modern translation to see how they compare.

That said, this is a wonderful change from the "self help" school of Christian writing - ("how to fix your life in a 2 easy stages by giving us your money...") This book is far more worthwhile than much of the output of the Christian literature industry. Well worth your consideration.

This book describes the adventures of a nineteenth-century peasant who spends much of his God-centered life wandering around Russia. It is an inspirational story about the value of praying which is sure to enrich one's Christian walk.

This 19th century classic is about a peasant wandering through Russia learning about the techniques of prayer from the great old men, the elders, the sages. The techniques and visions of prayer explained in this book made immediate sense to me, and it was a door into another world.
