5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic new release from The Coal Porters, 7 Mar. 2010
This review is from: Durango: April 17-April 30 (Audio CD)
Even if you don't think you're a fan of this genre of music, buy this album anyway - I guarantee it will uplift you. If you're already a bluegrass fan - then Durango should be in your collection already. Sid Griffin has combined his alt country roots from his old and achingly hip band The Long Ryders with the blue grass/folk influences of his heroes. The talent on Durango is envious and impressive; I never knew I liked fiddle playing til I heard Carly Frey who must have blisters on her fingers - amazing to listen to even more incredible when you see her play live with The Coal Porters. You think that duelling banjo scene from the movie Deliverance is cool? Then listen to Dick Smith pick up a storm on Durango. Combined with the rest of the band's talent, amazing guitar and mandolin playing, rousing vocals and Ed Stasium on production (Ramones, Smithereens, Belinda Carlisle, Jeff Healey Band) - you have a fantastic album which will have you singing long in to the night and left aching for more. My musical tastes range from Iggy and the Stooges to Radiohead and after discovering The Coal Porters I'm going hunting for more blue grass references. If you get the chance to go see the band live - you will be hooked.

I have been a fan of the Coal Porters for some time now and this album is a fantastic addition to their already outstanding catalogue. Drawing on a range of musical influences and expertly combining them into a whole new sound, Durango is a witty, poignant, deep and soulful piece of work in which the exemplary talents of each of the CPs come together seamlessly.
