5.0 out of 5 stars Judy Collins Original Album Series
With 5 original albums in one package for just over a tenner, this is just incredible value for money. Forget the issues others have raised about how poor the packaging is (it's actually very good, being minature versions of the original album covers), or whether there should be more extensive package notes, for fans of Judy Collins (or even the casual listener at this...

1.0 out of 5 stars A dissapointing collection
If you are a Judy Collins fan you should have all these albums. If not then 5 albums in a box set seems like good value.Don't be fooled, the minamalist packaging and no sleeve notes are not worthy of her name.It seems the record company is trying to 'cash in' on her early works.Stick to the 2 albums on one CD.At least they have sleeve notes and some details of the producer...

5.0 out of 5 stars Judy Collins Original Album Series, 26 Oct 2010

Forget the issues others have raised about how poor the packaging is (it's actually very good, being minature versions of the original album covers), or whether there should be more extensive package notes, for fans of Judy Collins (or even the casual listener at this price), you just cannot go wrong - original albums, clear CD sound, at a lower price per album than I paid for the original LPs, even after 30-odd years of inflation, certainly works for me!

This is a truly majestic collection. I've been a little disappointed with some of these collections by other artists-they have simply not picked the best albums. But this one is right on the nail. Wildflowers and Who knows Where The Time Goes are two of the greatest folk singer-songwriter albums in existence. In My Life is not far behind and certainly showed she was gearing up to produce the two aforementioned - with amazing versions of Suzanne, In My Life itself and the Marat Sade excerpt on board, it would always be something special. The fifth album, Judith, showed an artiste at her peak - full of confidence, singing superbly and with great material at her fingertips. For those who are worrying about the mastering, fear not it's fine. I do most of my listening on quality headphones and the sound quality on all albums is spot on. Really, put your hand in your pocket and splash out on these - you'll never regret it.

Oh Judy blue eyes, it's so strange to gauge your contributions to the musical canon, gathered here on a collection of five of her early albums, from 1965-1975. In an age where every Tom, Dick and X-factor wannabe inflicts their versions of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah and god knows what else, it's hard to remember a time when Judy's interpretations of the then obscure Cohen were the hippest thing on the folk music block, who was to know the insane contrast between Judy's clear as a bell diction and classical discipline and the Cohen growl? That she covered early Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot (what's with Judy and Canadians?), Jacques Brel and Randy Newman amongst many, defines her eclectic and nearly immaculate (her attempt on Donovan's "Sunny Goodge Street" completely bizarre) taste in contemporary music. After all these years, I have to admit newly admiring her early self penned compositions such as "Albatross". For those who are only familiar with her warhorses, Both Sides Now and Amaing Grace, this bargain collection is a box of many delights (and admittedly the occasional dud) - and highly recommended as such.

First the format, about which, I have absolutely no problems whatsoever. As I see it, if the selection of albums is done with sensitivity and, if the discs actually reproduce the music correctly i.e. with no major change from the original LP's, then I think it's absolutely marvellous, that we, the consumers are presented with such a large amount of representative material from an artist at a highly attractive price. Ideal, in fact for someone who has little, or no material on said artist.

That indeed is my case. I do have one of these albums on vinyl but that's all, and I hadn't played it in yonks.

So is it representative? I would say yes. For most artists of some longevity you have to leave something out or select a particular period. In this case the selector has ignored the first four albums (one of which, being live, was somewhat overlapping with the others). This early grouping is much more folky in the traditional sense of the word. If this particular set sells well then the more folky grouping could follow as later release (and of course, there's nothing to stop anyone searching out individul albums).

Do I like it (or them)? To some extent that does inevitably relate to my research beforehand. But the answer is an unqualified Yes and I would urge anyone wanting to find out a fair amount about Judy to purchase this set. Reading is not a substitute for listening.
