5.0 out of 5 stars Well I like it!, 2 Feb 2010

You often read or hear people moaning about Norton Internet Security. I really don't know what their problem is. I've been using Norton Internet Security for several years now. I buy the new version each year, usually from Amazon, at around half the price Symantec charge just to renew your subscription to the previous version. It has always worked well for me. A feature I particularly like is the "Identity Safe" which can store the log-ins (user name and password) to websites you visit. It means you can have a different, highly secure, password for every site while only having to remember the one for Identity Safe itself.
I bought this "Performance Pack" as I wanted to put Norton Internet Security 2010 on a netbook I had just bought and I'd already used up the 3 licences on the copy I already had. The netbook came with McAfee pre-installed but it just wasn't what I was used to. McAfee seemed to interrupt what I was doing a fair bit whereas NIS doesn't. Norton Utilities is new and unfamiliar to me. It seems to work well but just works differently to the TuneUp Utilities I am used to. Probably just a matter of getting used to it.
I've given 5 stars because both products in the pack were easily installed and both seem to do what they claim. What more can you ask?

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST Internet Security Suite on the PLANET.!, 16 Feb 2010

BEST Internet Security Suite on the PLANET.! - at the moment...

Before I moved back to (NORTON Internet Security Suite 2010 with Performance Pack), I used Kaspersky Internet Security Suite 07, 08, 09 & 2010.

I found Kaspersky Internet Security Suite very, very aggressive and using up lots of system resources - however, it never let me down.

I built my own new intel i5 750 Machine with Win 7 x64 and installed NORTON ISPP 2010 whole package as it had lots of 5 stars reviews all over the internet and in Magazines.

Anyways, I must say I'm trilled to bits with the New 2010 GUI interface - 10/10 very attractive layout indeed.!

It has all the features Kaspersky KIS 2010 has +Plus lots more, even the Performance Pack with "Norton System Works" & with "Norton Utilities" it certainly helps keep everything running smooth in superb. -:

Excellent value for money, and its very easy on the CPU & MEMORY. (3 computer licences for the price of 1.) FAB :)

I can remember the day's when "Norton System Works" was £49.99 in PC World alone for the CD Package, without any Security Pack, so this is a Bargain. Its already found several attacks, trying to get past the firewall and blocked each one of them, very impressed.

Its really done a number on Kaspersky I.S this year, if it keeps up this level of security I will renew my 2011 subscription. (God willing)...

Thanks for reading. 10/10.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Pheonix rising from the ashes?, 9 Mar 2010

This review is from: Norton Internet Security 2010 Performance Pack, 1 User, 3 Computers (PC CD) (CD-ROM)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
Until last year I would not have even considered using Norton Internet Security, my previous experiences of Norton was that it tended to use up all the system resources, a bloated heavy weight piece of programming , that was intrusive with its pop up warnings and that when uninstalled it would leave bits of itself all over the system registry. It even required a special program to remove it from a computer without which any other security suite could not be installed in its place.
Norton has listened to the feedback from its customers and now it has been so improved it is like a phoenix emerging from the ashes. In fact it may now have just taken the crown as the number one security suite.
Norton 2010 now has an extremely light footprint on system resources, in fact one of best of all security suites on the market at this time. It adds very little to the boot time at start up and is certainly less intrusive than its predecessors. I have installed this on the three computers I run at home and on three different operating systems XP SP2, Vista Ultimate and Windows 7 Home Premium. So far installation was faultless.
The interface with the program can be daunting and could cause confusion if you are looking to tweak the settings and this is simply because there are a `lot' of settings. However for the average user it works out of the box and works well. It is no longer intrusive and does not slow down web browsing.
The new Safe Web is browser based and uses reported intelligence that gives web sites a safety rating. It also checks any downloads you make against data from other Norton users and makes comparisons to see if what you are downloading is out of the ordinary. If it does not like what it sees it will advise accordingly.
The only downsides I can see are these:
1. The cost compared to other programs.
2. If you want to keep your computer up to date with the newest security suite each year, you will have to buy a new product each time. If the program is updated to a new edition such as a 2011 edition a few weeks or a couple of months after you buy it you are still stuck with it for the remainder of your licence or you will be obliged to pay again.
There are security suites that you licence for a year and if a new edition comes out before your license expires it will automatically upgrade you to the brand new edition. These also tend to cost a little less.
The choice they say is yours but you will probably not go wrong with this.

Norton Internet Security is widely rated by IT mags as current best of the crop - effective against malware and light on use of system resources. I switched to Norton from ZoneAlarm Suite last year (after trying McAfee and not getting on with it) and am glad I did.

If you want Norton Utilities too, this is a great package, combining the two products at a good saving. Otherwise, stick with the standard Norton Internet Security or, especially for less experienced users, choose Norton 360 V4 which hides the complexity and can be pretty much left to its own devices.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good choice if you want more than the basic Microsoft security package, 1 Mar 2010

This review is from: Norton Internet Security 2010 Performance Pack, 1 User, 3 Computers (PC CD) (CD-ROM)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
This version of Norton security software, bundled with Norton Utilities, installs quickly and painlessly, and has little performance impact. After installing (and downloading the inevitable updates from the internet), Norton turns off Windows Defender and the Windows firewall and replaces them, and also provides antivirus protection, which updates with tiny incremental updates every 15 minutes or so.

There is a spam filter for Microsoft Outlook, and a utility to remember login details for webpages you visit using Internet Explorer. In both cases, these are more sophisticated than the similar functionality that comes with these Microsoft products. The Norton Internet Explorer toolbar indicates whether you are on a safe website, and it also annotates search results to show which pages are safe. None of the web browser functionality works with Google Chrome.

Basic security functionality (firewall, anti-spyware and now even anti-virus) is available from Microsoft for free. The Microsoft products are very basic, and lack configurability. The Norton product is much more sophisticated and configurable, and has a very professional-looking GUI that makes use of bright friendly colours. I found some of the plethora of Norton's configuration options confusing, but the default values seem sensible, so there should be no need to change them.

The license includes additional software to allow parents to manage their childrens' internet access. If you want to use this, the program is downloaded separately.

Norton Internet Security takes a little more system resource than the Microsoft equivalents. I tried it on a Windows 7 machine with just 1GB of RAM, and the system slowed down noticeably. On a machine with more memory, this is unlikely to be much of a problem.

Norton Utilities is bundled as bonus software, on a separate disk and with a separate license key. It lets you tune your PC by defragmenting and tuning the registry, and by choosing the startup options. It also provides easy access to the built-in Windows performance-related tools, and it lets you benchmark the performance of your PC. There's not so much of a need for this nowadays, as Windows is becoming better at maintaining itself. I allowed Norton Utilities to optimise and compact my PC's registry, which worked fine, but when I asked it to optimise my Windows services, it tried to turn off my media server service - not something I wanted.

This is a good value bundle if you are not satisfied with the free security software from Microsoft. It is less obtrusive and less CPU-hungry than any other paid-for security software suite I have tried. Norton Utilities is a bonus of dubious value.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Package with Total Protection, 10 Mar 2010

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
I used Norton Internet Security, Utilities & AntiVirus before. Later I swapped the package to MacAfee, which claims their protection is more thorough than other major competitors and I used it for a long time with a different PC. And my latest trial has been Webroot, which I still use with my laptop and think it's very good too.

But with this 2010 I've come back to Norton, because it doesn't slow down the PC and it covers 3 PCs for a year, and importantly the price has gone much lower than before, thanks to the competition with rival companies.

The other reason I have started using Norton is that this package comes with Utilities, which helps my PCs perform better and diagnose them and fix them if there are any problems, for example de-fragmentation of the hard drive and identity protection, which is a vital function nowadays.

So far, I'm enjoying the performance and the graphics, and so many improved functions come with such a reasonable price, so I can recommend it to any PC users. FYI, this package supports XP, Vista and 7.

Hope this helps.

There's very little to say in a review for this product- except that the installation is a very simple and straightforward process- and that's an understatement! The only minor problem I encountered was in the replacement of my previous security protection, which was dealt with easily enough, as the Norton software prompted me to remove it and then restart my PC. Apart from that it was smooth sailing all the way. You wouldn't have to train a monkey to use this software.

Having previously protected my PC with MacAfee antivirus software, I can't say I've so far noticed a great deal of difference in the two products having now installed and completed scans using Norton. All that differs is the appearance, but basically it's the same product.

This software can be used on up to 3 home PC's, the installation is simplistic and there are many functions, especially on the second Utilities disc, most of which I haven't as yet felt the need to trial.

If you're looking for a basic anti-virus software package to protect your PC for a year, especially one with a no-nonsense installation and that's user friendly, then you really need not look any further.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good value product, but poor sales support, 15 Mar 2010

Amazon did their part. Good price with speedy delivery. But despite this being a 3 User pack, I found I could not install it on more than one PC. On the second PC it said "Invalid registration number". So I loggon onto their online support, and started an online conversation with their tech support people, but was continually disconnected before getting any solution. For 29 quid, the three user pack is a bargain, if it can actually be installed onto three PCs. At the moment, it is only installed on ONE PC which makes the price reasonable, but not as much of a bargain.

5.0 out of 5 stars Security and performance - what more could you want?, 27 Feb 2010

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
This product contains both Norton Internet Security 2010 and Norton TuneUp Utilities 14.5. Firstly, NIS2010 is a big improvement over previous versions as it's now much faster (although the 2009 version contained some of this speed increase). While in the past, your computer would've been useless while Norton was doing something, no more! It now only scans your computer while you aren't using it, therefore you can have the full performance of your computer when you need it. The firewall component is also very light, meaning you are protected at all times, at very little cost to system resources. It is also updated every 5 minutes automatically.

NIS2010 also contains download insight which monitors everything you download and install, and a little box pops up in the bottom right hand corner to tell you if it's safe. If it's not, then it will give you the option to block it or override the control. Otherwise, everything proceeds as normal. In addition to this, a monthly report is also displayed (although this can be turned off) that gives a rundown on everything that's happened in the last month.

When I installed Norton Utilities 14.5, I was a bit surprised to see that it used the PC Tools user interface and also the smart update system from it, rather than Norton's own LiveUpdate. However, that makes little difference because it certainly seems to work. I also have TuneUp installed on my computer and had just run a scan with it, however, Norton has found thousands of items that need fixing that TuneUp didn't find! I was slightly disappointed that they hadn't kept the 1 button cleanup system from previous versions, however it is easy enough to clean manually, just a few extra clicks!

Services offered by Norton Utilities 14.5 include registry cleaner, disk cleaner, disk defragmenter and registry defragmenter. In addition to this, programs which run at startup can be optimised to give a much speedier boot time. This program can also be used to monitor system information and update windows. Overall, it's a very user friendly interface and all the tools are self explanatory.

There may still be one or two bugs in the software, nothing major, but when I was scanning through the options of what to clean, it told me that Google Chrome browser wasn't installed. Despite this, it cleaned it anyway!

On a final note, this software (NIS2010 and Utilities 14.5) both come with licences for 3 PC's. Only NIS2010 has a limited licence of 1 year, Utilities has a perpetual licence. Overall, a very fine piece of software which does anything you could possibly want!
