3.0 out of 5 stars Amazing film lousy DVD audio., 25 Oct 2010
This review is from: Fist Of Legend [DVD] [1994] (DVD)
Dont be mistaken this is one of Jet Li's finer piece, it features outstanding fight choreography and great performance from Li him self. the plot may be the same as bruce lee's fist of fury but legends polishes up on certain aspect such as the relationship between the japanese and chinese, now in legends not all japanese are racist or evil. the importance of this film is undeniable it is what inspired the fight scenes in the Matrix.

now for the negative; the film is the original American release so the video quality is great but retains the original American opening credits which is tolerable. the major problem though lies in the lazy cantonese audio conversion no effort is made to sync the Sound FX with the action screen so during fight scenes the second of delay of effects can grate. this is less notable during the dialogue scenes. the subtitles are also off the dubbing rather than the cantonese so some inconsistency are apparent to cantonese speakers.

which is such a shame for this would have been the definitive DVD release of Legend featuring some engaging extras like; yasuaki kurata interview, chin siu ho interview, gordan chan interview, kurata action school (little clip of the japanese stunt crew), a decent audio commentary and perspective look from Brett Ratner (unfortunately a pointless addition).

your purchase depends heavily on how much you can stomach the out of sync audio.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, 26 Nov 2010

This is an awesome Kung Fu movie. If you're a Jet Li and Yuen Woo-Ping fan or martial arts movie fan in general then you won't be disappointed.

Adapting a classic Bruce Lee movie is a risky business but they managed to pull it off extremely well, paying homage to the original (Fist of Fury) but also bringing some new ideas to the table and giving a less one-dimensional portrayal of the Japanese for a change.

Amazing fights, great story and a great tribute to Bruce Lee's Fist of Fury.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best martial arts film ever, Sorry Bruce !, 23 Jan 2012
This review is from: Fist Of Legend [DVD] [1994] (DVD)
What a quality film, this is far superior to the Bruce lee's Fist Of Fury
Jet Li is brilliant as always. This has some of the best fights i have ever seen.
This is an absolute must for any martial arts fan.
As always they(Cine-Asia) put some brilliant extras in the highlight being the screen fighting seminar with Japanese Action legend Kurata Yasuaki.

4.0 out of 5 stars One Jet Li`s best, 18 April 2012
By
LoBo (BodÝ, Norway) - See all my reviews
One of my favourite Jet Li films. I think it has good acting by them all and great fight scenes, but i think the undercranking in many of the fight scenes and some wire work was unnecessary. This film has many complex fight scenes made the legendary master Yuen Woo Ping.

Picture quality: 4.5/5

I think this film has pretty good quality. Strong colours and more importantly all the film grain intact. I think the details this film shows is very good compared to my old Dimension DVD. This is the best the film has looked on home video.

Audio quality: 4/5

I think the English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 was pretty good. I compared it to original audio in Cantonese: Dual Mono. I like the music and sound effects added the English dub better. The Cantonese audio sounded quite poor in my opinion. The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track has some good bass and clear music. Nothing to complain about.

Film: 4.5/5
Overall: 4/5

I won't comment on the story to much as I bought this film just to watch the fighting sequences. They are great but cannot help to think that Bruce Lee's would be better. I mean the story is quite OK. Worth watching.

You have to remember when buying these films on blu ray at justy how old they are and that the acting is really bad and cringe worthy. However the fighting is the best you'll see from jet li. Proper bone breaking/cracking stuff.. I have seen a ton of these films and even i was like.. WOW!

I have been a fan of Jet Li for several years and I have quite a few of his movies but this one is the cream of the crop, I am sure if Bruce Lee was a live today he would be impressed, the movie is totally awesome...

3.0 out of 5 stars Deleted scenes and sountrack reinstated but poor subtitles, 25 May 2010
This review is from: Fist Of Legend [DVD] [1994] (DVD)
Fist Of Legend (Subtitled) [VHS]

The Made In Hong Kong VHS is still the best version of the film, and my review of it still stands.

Ting's opium smoking scene at the Dizzy Star was missing from the VHS version, but it did have the original HK soundtrack (including Joseph Koo's bold score and Cantonese language) and even original opening credits. It was as perfect as a presentation of *Fist of Legend* as has yet been seen, and for a decade fans of the film had to force themselves to swallow the unpalatable Hollywood Pictures Home Video DVD (with tacky credits, even tackier score and ultra-tacky English dub).

Fist Of Legend [DVD]

Francophones have had a 2-disc collector's edition since 2002! A perfect presentation of the film from Seven7 but with French subtitles.

So what of this new Dragon Dynasty DVD?

It reinstates the original soundtrack, though retains the tacky opening credits of the dubious Hollywood Pictures Home Video version, which was disappointing. The sound and picture are superb though, enough for your to forgive the opening credits.

What is unforgivable is the quality of the subtitles. They are a huge backwards step even compared to the Made In Hong Kong version released in 1998. They flash across the screen too quickly to read and are badly written with obvious mistakes. They could almost be machine translation and render the Dragon Dynasty DVD frustratingly as unapproachable as the Seven7 version.

The only Region 2 DVD version I've yet to try is the Japanese version.
