TOP 500 REVIEWERon 4 November 2009
The Chipmunks have been around for as long as I can remember and I have vague recollections of them being on TV when I was younger. However, I never really paid them that much attention and wasn't a particular `Chipmunk' fan. It was a case of coming across this film by accident as opposed to knowing about it. Not having any young kids I wasn't aware of the Chipmunk Fever that my friends now inform me was going on.

The film was released in 2007 and I discovered it whilst on a tediously long plane journey where the options were quite limited. After hearing the hubby's giggles after 10 minutes viewing I decided to give it a go. Secretly I am thrilled that I watched it as I fell in love with this film from the get go and am glad I watched it before deciding to buy the DVD too.

Now let me clarify I am in my thirties so by no means in the targeted audience range. This film that crosses your standard movie with animation is a U certificate and aimed at the younger audience but don't let that deter you!

This film features Dave Sewell (Jason Lee) who is a struggling musician. He comes upon the Chipmunks, Alvin, Simon and Theodore by coincidence as the tree they were living in was chopped down. The three boys (as I will call them) basically plot themselves up in Dave's house and subsequently wreck the place. First off Dave is shocked and in disbelief that these three Chipmunks have not only made themselves at home but they can talk. After getting over the initial shock Dave threatens to kick them out, but when he hears they can sing he decides to let them stay. On one condition! They sing one the songs he has written for them and they present these songs to Dave's friend Ian (played by David Cross) who owns Jet records.

After many false starts the boys perform and Ian whisks them off and ends up making them sign a record deal. Meanwhile unbeknown to Dave he has actually ended up growing attached to the three of them and when Ian starts pushing them to take on a World Tour he intervenes. Ian fills the boy's heads with nonsense about Dave not caring and tells them that if they stick with him they can have anything they want. With Dave out of the picture, Alvin, Simon and Theodore burn out pretty quickly. Dave decides that he will do whatever it takes to get his boys back home where they belong.

The film runs for 87 minutes which I think is just right. Now I know that I am an adult but I have to say it was great to watch such a lovely film. No swearing, no violence, no nudity, just three chipmunks and catchy songs. What more could you ask for? This film had me giggling at the Chipmunk's childish antics and all in all me and my hubby had an hour and a half of our flight just fly by! Yes it's aimed at kids but if you want some light and funny entertainment this will do the trick. Be warned though, if you are anything like me the little jingles they sing will be stuck in your head for hours.

Loved it!

Hilarious real-life CGI induced comedy! The opening scene had me in fits of laughter with chipmunk rendition of Daniel Powter's "Bad Day".

This comedy family film sees Alvin, Simon and Theodore get unexpectedly relocated from their forest home to the big city. They're taken in by Dave (Jason Lee) - a struggling advertiser with an ambition to write music. His encouter with the cute, mischievous squirrel like creatures leads Dave to find out their musical abilities and promotes their music career which explodes into a world wide phenomena.

The SFX scenes are clever - similar to the real-life Garfield movies, with some really good rib tickler jokes. The music is top rate especially with the chipmunk voices singing and dancing - and like Toy Story, there's some adult related jokes hidden in there that children would miss.

Great fun and guaranteed a laugh - just don't take it if you would with singing and talking chipmunks.

A film that cleverly combines CGI animation with real people, the storyline goes like this: three talkative chipmunks with a musical talent live in a tree that is cut down and sent to Los Angeles. That's where they meet down-on-his-luck musician David, and after wrecking his house the four of them combine to form a musical team, with David doing the songwriting and the chipmunks performing the songs. Their struggle for stardom is held back by their unscrupulous record executive, who wants to break up and exploit this little family for his own personal gain.

This is a film for children of all ages I guess, but their parents won't mind watching alongside. My children were laughing from start to finish and loved every minute, something that could not be said of the DVD they had seen the day before (Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs). This was a successful purchase, both girls nodding enthusiastically and without hesitation when I asked them if they liked it, if they wanted to see it again and again, and if they wanted me to buy the sequel (not yet released on DVD as of Jan 2010). They both gave it 'four and a half stars' - I am giving it a comfortable four because I reserve five stars for the really outstanding and exceptional. No hesitation in recommending it however, it had me laughing almost as much as the children so it gets the thumbs-up from me.

I bought this for my son, and he loved it. Having watched The chipmunks as a child, I enjoyed watching it with him too (again... And again!)

I'm a 30-something with no kids so didn't think I would enjoy this film but boy was I wrong. It's very funny, has some great music, is moving and has a happy ending - what more could you ask for? I've now watched it dozens of times and I never seem to tire of it. For anyone like me who used to watch the Chipmunks cartoon as a kid, it's the story of how the Chipmunks met Dave. Some of the scenes are just so cute and funny - you've really got to watch what the Chipmunks are doing in the background sometimes and some of the subtler aspects I only got after watching it a second time. Excellent film, especially great to watch on Christmas eve.

When I first saw the trailer to Alvin & the Chipmunks, I was horrified, I grew up with the chipmunks cartoon in the 70's and 80's. But after thinking about it, the chipmunks have been around since the 50's, my generation's chipmunks were a new introduction to us as well as this movie is to the kids of 2007. There are flaws here and there about the film, but it was meant for the kids, you have to admit. But the voices and characters are cute and the story works. It's a new story to the chipmunk's tale and adventures.

Alvin, Simon, and Theodore, three singing, talking, and dancing chipmunks have just got their home (a tree, naturally) torn down and they are taken into the city. They jump into a basket being carried by Dave, a failing song writer, and they go home with him. He first shoves them off, but after hearing their singing, he comes up with the idea to write songs for them and see where it goes. They are a success and everything seems to be going very well for them. But until the music business takes advantage of them and tears their family apart, they realise that Dave is really who they need.

Alvin and the Chipmunks of course is not the movie of the year, but for a kid's movie, it was very cute. Judging from my generation of Alvin, Simon, and Theodore, yeah, it was strange seeing them through what this generation considers cute and fun was a bit silly to me. I wished that they would've focused more on the building of the relationship between Dave and the boys. If you're just looking for innocent fun and a cute family flick, I think you might enjoy Alvin and the Chipmunks.
