Absolutely mental !!???? lol If you love Danny Dyer (as i do) you'll love this movie, however under no circumstances expect to understand what the heck is going on !! Its extremely bizarre to say the least but definitely worth a watch. Would i watch it again, maybe not anytime soon lol but i'm happy to have it in my collection of Danny Dyer movies :)

An American student (Maggie Grace - Shannon from Lost) gets hit by a cab whilst running away from her father. Feeling guilty and already running late, Whitey (Danny Dyer) throws her in the cab and takes her with him to wonderland, promising to return her when he concludes his business there. Alice comes round with total amnesia and the rest of the film is spent trying to piece together what happened to her and who she is. Ultimately she finds out her name is Alice Dodgson (Literary scholars will be happy here - Dodgson was Carroll's real name) and that she is the daughter of a billionaire who has posted a $10 million reward for her safe return. This has the shady inhabitants of Wonderland all itching to get a piece of Alice in order to pick up the reward, chaos ensues as Dyer wrestles with his conscience and his desire to cash-in.

The characters are well fleshed out, each with their own idioms, Matt King (Rocknrolla) deserves a special mention here as a brilliant, quasi-insane, fairground owner. A favourite of mine was Tweedle-dee and Tweedle-dum as two bouncers who seem to be a few cards short of a full deck. However, Danny Dyer does play....well, Danny Dyer and continues to provide laughs despite being horrendously type-cast these days. The film is good with a few twists and turns but ultimately feels a bit too contrived and whilst it was a noble effort to bring Alice in wonderland into the 21st century setting, it falls short of any true wonderment. You will have fun picking out who is who from the original into this, but it all feels a bit wooden and the ending is lacking any of the intended emotional punch. A good film, it will whittle away a couple of hours, but don't expect to be changed by the experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Danny Dyer = hilarious!!!!, 2 April 2010
This review is from: Malice In Wonderland (2009) [DVD] [2010] (DVD)
This film is weird but wonderful...the charactors are fun and the speed of the film is perfect (an hour and a half). Danny Dyer is cased perfectly in his role as a london cabbie, whitty as ever!!
The film picks up on vital parts of the original story (the party, time, drugs etc) and delivers a very modern take on a fantasy previously aimed at children.
Loved it!!

A good story, good characters, well set, kept me watching. So why only 4 stars - I think that it could have been developed a little more but it was fun tying the characters with the story ones.

mmmmm, not exactly sure what genre you'd put this in.A mixture of gangster and fantasy I suppose.Anyhow ,it is basically Alice in Wonderland set in today's London with all the original characters replaced by lots of Cockney sterotypes and Alice as a rich American's daughter.Danny Dyer does what The Director asks of him of him,and I liked the female lead Maggie Grace. It was an original idea to put the book in this setting and the makers should be commended for that, but people looking for your 'tradional' gangster film may be disappointed....

I'm no film critic but I watched this with an open mind. Alice in Wonderland meets the underworld...totally messed up on all levels but I loved it and it has Danny Dyer in so bonus!

3.0 out of 5 stars Danny just about saves it., 19 Feb 2010
This review is from: Malice In Wonderland (2009) [DVD] [2010] (DVD)
Slightly sprawling, Danny Dyer and Maggie Grace are good but seem a little lost at times. An odd script and minor characters popping in for no discernable reason don't help. Having said that, Danny Dyer does have some funny lines that make it enjoyable. Of all Dyer's films lately, this is not up there with Jack Said or Doghouse. Like the idea of such an odd take on Alice in Wonderland but could have done better.

1.0 out of 5 stars Truly horrible!, 9 April 2011

This review is from: Malice In Wonderland (2009) [DVD] [2010] (DVD)
I have not got a clue what this one was about. The Cover indicated some sort of thriller but the film was nowhere near that. Was it a comedy? No. western? No. Animated? No. It was about some sort of dreamworld where Maggie Grace is walking, running, dreaming, sleeping, and everything else. I confused taxi driver is part of the story but it is unclear what he is doing. My wife fell asleep but I managed to stay awake the whole film but can not for the life of me tell what it was all about. My wife suggested that the title Malice in Wonderland should indicate that this was story linked to Alice in Wonderland. Who knows? The cover also states "guns, gangsters, pimps & prostitues. Wonderland just got dirtier". Eh? maybe some sort of advanced art movie?

Why did the cover not tell you the truth? This is not a thriller or anything like a drama. It was just confusion and then more of that.

For those of you who understood this one and actually liked it congratulations. For us it was a waste of good plastic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surreal twist to a classic tale!, 17 May 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Malice In Wonderland (2009) [DVD] [2010] (DVD)
I don't usually write reviews, but I feel the negative reviews given to this film are quite biased and not objective. Most people hold to heart the traditional tale of the classic: "Alice in Wonderland." If you are one of these people and are expecting a nice, warm and fuzzy remake - please stay clear! This is not how this iteration is intended. This film is (to what I perceive) a cult twisted vision on what Alice in Wonderland might have been if she had ingested a little more than a bottle of shrinking potion and more like what you might buy on the streets of Amsterdam. Featuring hookers, gangsters, a Bob Marley wannabe (as the Caterpillar) and DJ Felix Chester as the Cheshire Cat, this twisted rehash is one that deserves its place next to the rest of the Alice in Wonderland legends.
