This review is from: Bach: Brandenburg Concertos (Audio CD)
This set of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos is part of a continuing series of recordings being undertaken by Riccardo Chailly and the Leipzig Gewandhausorchester. The recordings took place in Leipzig on 22/23 November 2007. The music is played on modern instruments (though there may be some early strings in the band somewhere) but performed with a fine sense of period style. Chailly is an immensely experienced and versatile musician who has worked with some of the most distinguished ensembles in the world and it seems that here, in Leipzig, he has found once again an expert ensemble with whom he can thoroughly enjoy making music. It is this sense of enjoyment, and of elegance and finesse, that comes over again and again in these familiar pieces. If there are no definitive recordings of the Brandenburgs, this one from Leipzig comes as close as any to satisfying all the demands of Bach's wonderful music.

It's very hard to criticise this proficient modern instrument recording of the "Brandenburgs"; if you were really picky, you might say that No.5 is slightly limp, but it really doesn't matter in the overall context of the excellence of the set.

Recorded in 2007, in splendid sound, Chailly brings joy, lightness, and a "bounce" to these warhorses of the repertoire. The link back to Mendelssohn's revival of Bach's works with "his" orchestra, the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, is compelling and this must be the most attractive modern instrument set of the "Brandenburgs" released in recent times.

However, no one set of these works can be everything to everyone and I think that the set from the Scottish Ensemble (here, Bach: Brandenburg Concertos, Violin Concertos) is equally good in it's understated way, and there are several excellent "period performance" alternatives, such as Tafelmusik (here, Brandenburg Concertos) or the Concert des Nations (here, Bach: The Six Brandenburg Concertos BWV 1046 - BWV 1051 (Le Concert Des Nations)), too.

Full of life and smiles, this set of "Brandenburgs" would grace any collection of these works. Highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars MUSIC TO DANCE TO, 5 July 2011
This review is from: Bach: Brandenburg Concertos (Audio CD)
Splendid surprise to hear a symphony orchestra really perform this music as dance music, as it should be. Especially No.6 is most impressive. Bravo Chailly!
