This review is from: Buck Clayton - Tenderly (Audio CD)
This is Buck Clayton in his prime 1959. He rcorded this in Paris at the end of an European tour with a mainstream group. On this splended session with just a rhythm session he reaches the same level as always Bobby Hackett on his Capitols and much more interesting than the Jonah Jones on the same label from the same era. On some tracks the rythm section (3 frenchmen plus Kansas Fields) sounds like the worst muzak or sometimes with shuffle beat but you will easy forget that when Buck lifts his horn and blows. Even in this company he shows that he is one of the greatest ever on his instrument both muted and on open trumpet. There is another Inner City CD recorded a couple of years later and if you like this you must have that one too. I have even more of this music on different Vogue/POP(F) vinyls and hope that all of this will be reissued on CD. Buck Clayton is worth it.
