Wood's collection of six short stories and a novella will keep you turning pages and when you get to the end of the book, you will want more. The protagonists are, for the most part, ordinary guys with more than a touch of a dark side thrown in. Todd Collins, the main character of the novella Fall Guy, is for the most part his own worst enemy. His job isn't going all that great and then his attempt to evade responsibility after a fender bender gets him into trouble that should have left him dead at the hands of a vicious criminal. But Todd is smarter than his nemesis expects. Though he starts out short on street smarts, he learns as he goes along and soon it's the criminals who have something to fear. You can't help but root for him even when he crosses over to the wrong side of the law. The other stories are just as delightful. Wood's dry humor shines, especially in Parental Control--my personal favorite of the short stories.

What an absolutely incredible collection of short stories from one of the greatest crime authors of all time, Simon Wood.

Centered around the working environment (in one way or another), this collection is dark and sinister and yet at times, is mischievously witty. As with all Simon Wood stories they are fast paced and will throw straight into the action and keep you guessing until the very end.

Of the six short stories, 'My Father's Secret' and 'Officer Down' really stand out, but for me the best is the incredible novella 'The Fall Guy'.

A definite 'MUST READ' for all fans of crime thrillers....

I've read some of Simon Wood's short work in various magazines and anthologies but to have the Wood worldview collected under one umbrella gives a keen glimpse into the coldly brilliant mind's eye of the author. Wood can make the double-cross seem like the smart choice, and has the uncanny ability to get you pulling for manipulative, immoral, and utterly human characters. Wood is blazing a path out of the dark alleys of the heart and into the literary spotlight.

I took a chance on this book of short stories, probably only attracted to the cover whilst browsing iAuthor because two of my favourite bands are Stiff Little Fingers and The Stiffs. I'm so glad I did, because each story is extremely well written and imaginatively conceived. Gritty crime, but without the usual stereotypes that can plague this genre. Perfectly paced, interesting characters and the odd turn of phrase that makes you stop just to re-read it. Very enjoyable.

I absolutely detest short stories and they should be clearly marked as such to stop me and others wasting their money.
