5.0 out of 5 stars Very nice re-issue of a superb album, 25 Dec. 2009
By
This review is from: Worst Case Scenario (Deluxe Edition) (Audio CD)
This deluxe re-issue contains 3 discs.

Cd1: Worst Case Scenario
Hopefully this one needs little introduction. It was originally released in 1994 but, unlike a lot of their contemporaries, this album still sounds fresh to the ears more than 15 years after its initial release. Yes, it's indierock from the grunge-era, but it bursts with so many original or extravagant ideas, twists and references which make the listening experience very, very rich indeed. The album is apparently 'gently remastered' but in all honesty, only the biggest soundfreaks will hear a significant difference I think.

Cd2: B-sides & rarities
Includes their very first & rare single 'Zea', all the b-sides from their singles in '94-'95, a cover of a Boudewijn De Groot original and two previously unreleased live tracks & two early demo recordings. This makes a very interesting listen indeed. The B-sides are more extravagant and off-beat than the original album tracks, but they reveal an unbridled enthousiasm & creativity from the group's members in those days that's just downright inspiring. As a collection, this disc could perhaps be compared to their 1995 offbeat EP 'My Sister Is My Clock'; sheer brilliance according to one, artistic wankery according to the other. I say brilliance!

Dvd: Time is the state of my jeans, Live footages & extras
* 'Time is the state of my jeans' is a making of-documentary, shot in 2009 and clocks in just under the hour. It features comments from all original band members, producers, record company bobos and famous fans (Placebo, Elbow, Snow Patrol). A very interesting documentary indeed, avoiding the boring typical footage of sound engineers at their mixing desks demonstrating this or that particular guitar solo. Instead, pretty much everyone involved talks openly about the origin of dEUS, the recording process, touring experiences, the impact of the album in Belgium and Europe and the internal frictions that caused two key members to quit the band in '95 and '96. A very nice historical document indeed.
* The live footage is what you'd expect: very nice snippets from the band in action at MTV (Most Wanted & 120 Minutes), Pinkpop festival 1995 and live in London. An entire, single live-set could possibly have been more interesting, but this collection is pretty sweet too.
* And finally there's also a fun, lo-fi 10-minute On the road-documentary of dEUS touring in England - very playful & entertaining to watch.

In all: a great re-issue. Original dEUS guitarist & painter Rudy Trouvé re-worked the original art & layout into a very cool new package, including a booklet with a bunch of nice, previously unreleased band pictures. As far as deluxe editions or fancy re-issues go, I don't think they get much better than this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best album of the NIneties, 9 Feb. 2010
This review is from: Worst Case Scenario (Deluxe Edition) (Audio CD)
This is my top album ever (shared with Huesker Due's Songs and Storiesof the Warehouse). It is some 15 years old and sounds still as fantastic as when I first listened to it on the train to Aix en Provence (after being dumped, if anyone cares). This edition is lovely presented and is great to have again in this new edition. All dEUS albums are sensational but WCS must be the best of them all. dEUS defies all comparisons and it is clear that WCS aged well, even if compared to the equally great early output of Radiohead (well indeed only The Bends is still relevant - to me at least). looking forward to the next dEUS tour.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deus debut masterpiece..., 4 Jun. 2012

This review is from: Worst Case Scenario (Deluxe Edition) (Audio CD)
Loved this album for years but only recently picked up this rather great Deluxe Edition. Along with the original album you get the super rare 'Zea EP' and a DVD jam-packed-full of quality extras. The original album is a must if you haven't got it already; a heady mix of Beefheart indebted strangness, Tom Waits' twisted-jazz, huge rock guitars and surreal lyrics! It came in the midst of 'grunge' but is far too clever/bonkers and arty for that label (although the lead single, 'Suds & Soda' did get played on MTV). The 'Zea EP' is in a similar vain and well worth your time while the DVD is great. There's a load of live performances and a documentary called 'Time Is the State of my Jeans' which has some revealing interviews with the band, the record label and some famous fans. The line-up responsible for 'Worst Case Scenario' split after making the album and while Tom Barman kept going and made an arguably more consistent slice of genius (The Ideal Crash!) there's not many bands that could make an album as unique and exciting as Deus' debut! If you're unsure just have a listen to the singles 'Suds n Soda', 'Via' and 'Hotel Lounge (Be the Death of Me)'. Absolute magic.

Brilliant album, had to get it to replace my vinyl copy that was sounding a bit worn. Still sound original even nearly twenty years later.
