The music offered here is from the peak of Dizzy's performing including "Birk's Works"; "Afro"; "World Statesman" and bonus tracks from "For Musicians Only". All recorded for Norman Granz between 1954 and 1957 CD1 has the Los Angeles recordings and CD2 has the New York sessions.
As the title implies "Afro" dating from 1954 brings together all of the influences of Afro-Cuban music and is a 7 track journey . "World Statesman" is the ultimate Dizzy big band album.
All the albums have had full price CD reissues with high prices now being sought for out of print copies. This 2 CD set is offering 3 definitive albums in excellent sound quality and bonus tracks for less than the cost of a single release. Not Now are building a large catalogue that will interest jazz fans and collectors across the world and increase access to this exciting material. Informative liner notes and good illustrations too. The total running time for the set is approx 148 minutes. A must for all jazz fans.

Great to have two albums from the U S Government's mid-fifties financed Dizzy Gillespie big band. Hadn't heard the Afro studio big band session before, nor the other small group tracks. Competitively priced double CD. Excellent music. Composers are listed but still searching the small print for the names of arrangers and soloists.

Dizzy Gillespie along side Charlie Parker were the innovators of Be Bop,a Jazz giant who was also inspirational with the Afro Cuban sound, with both styles covered on two CDs.I bought this for the up tempo version of Caravan. Essential!

This is a great CD of one of the greatest of jazz of all time. At this price is a must buy. Very funny accent in the song with spanish title "yo no quiero bailar", that he sings like balar, without the i, which means to say baaahh, like sheeps do.
