4.0 out of 5 stars A film so tough, it could break your DVD player...
Two plot strands run throughout this modern day western set on the Mexico/Texas border. The first is the conflict between childhood friends Jack Benteen (Nick Nolte) and Cash Bailey (Powers Boothe), now a Texas Ranger and Drug Kingpin respectively. The second is the planning and execution of a bank heist by a covert military team. Sounds cool right? It is...

3.0 out of 5 stars Dated.
Corny in places, but plenty of action going on. The usual Mexican gangsters and bullets flying everywhere sort of film.

Director Walter Hill is no stranger to finely crafted action, having cut his teeth as assistant director on 'Bullitt' and as screenwriter of 'The Getaway'. He has gone on to helm classics like 'Hard Times', 'The Warriors' and 'Southern Comfort'. He brings a grittiness to the film that other directors wouldn't have. You can really feel the opressive heat and grime of the border towns.

The cast assembled for 'Extreme Prejudice' is fantastic. Besides Nolte and Boothe there's Michael Ironside (Scanners/Total Recall/Starship Troopers), Clancy Brown (Highlander/The Shawshank Redemption) and William Forsythe (action movie fans will remember him as Richie from 'Out For Justice'). Everyone here is a tough guy. They all look like they shave with machetes and wash their armpits with brillo pads. Maria Conchita Alonso is the only notable female member of the cast but her character is basically used as a tool to play the men off against each other.

The film is rife with hard-boiled dialogue ("I don't give up my gun without somebody gettin' hurt") and brutal slow motion gun fights (Sam Peckinpah is obviously a huge influence on Walter Hill) but what sets 'Extreme Prejudice' apart from most other action films is the memorable characters and hardcore style. It's the kind of film they just don't make anymore. Any action fan should be proud to have this in their collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Above average modern western, 2 Dec 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Extreme Prejudice [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Set along the Texas-Mexico border, this is a modern day western blending high tech marines and old style Texas Rangers against local drug baron (Powers Booth). Excellent supporting performances, particularly by Michael Ironside make this good fun, despite the occasionally wooden performance of Nick Nolte. Overall this works surprisingly well.

It's action all the way as Texas ranger Nick Nolte takes on a ruthless drug dealer and a gang of Army renegades in this slick production from action maestro Walter Hill. Gravel voiced Nolte is ideal as the tough no-nonsense cop who's just trying to keep his old friend turned drug dealer Cash Bailey at bay. Powers booth plays Bailey and to give you an idea how tough he is, he crushes a scorpion in his hand...I do that all the time. Renegade Army officer sets up a bank raid and some dodgy deal with Bailey but doesn't recon on the Ranger getting in the way. Maria Conchita Alonso lends some sultry beauty to the proceedings and Rip Torn has a blast with some harsh dialogue as Nolte's second in command. This is quite violent and the whole thing culminates in a massive slo mo shootout with blood packs galore. No thought needed, just grab yourself a beer and press play.

Nolte and Boothe have probably never been better, Rip Torn great, Maria Conchita Alonso ravishing, Walter Hill on top form, excellent sound and picture quality, and a fascinating interview with Hill thrown in. Great stuff.

4.0 out of 5 stars "The Wild Bunch" for the 80's, 29 May 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Extreme Prejudice [DVD] (DVD)
Extreme prejudice is an action packed modern day western with Nick Nolte playing Texas ranger Jack Benteen who is on the trail of drug smugglers and a rogue U.S Military unit who are involved in the bigger picture.

Its a bit of a homage to old westerns, the most obvious being the Wild bunch (1969). Director Walter Hill seemed to specialise in off beat heroes and was always into the good v evil action theme. Definitely one for the boys with gunfights and punch ups a plenty.

Nolte is strangely subdued as the lead and i feel that he tries to play it straight a bit too much. Having said that, the supporting cast are very good, Powers Booth obviously relishing his bad guy role and Rip Torn steals every scene he's in.

The final shootout is very "peckinpah-esque" and satisfyingly wraps things up in a hail of bullets.

Great fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXTREME PREJUDICE directed by Walter Hill, 27 Jun 2014
This review is from: Extreme Prejudice [DVD] (DVD)
A tightly-buttoned Texas Ranger and his best friend turned Mexican Drug Baron fight over the same woman, whilst a unit of supposedly dead American special forces soldiers plan to destroy them both.

Watching this film is like mainlining testosterone. It's a modern day (for the 1980s) Western about what a man's gotta do: shoot the bad guy, rescue the gal (even if she does want to...talk) and act tougher than old boot leather.

On one level it's ridiculous, with its crazy-savage violence, taciturn men of action, vintage codes of honour and absurd plot -- but the Peckinpah-like dust and sweat and blood keep everything believably grimy.

If you enjoy men's movies with great one liners, brutal violence and a cast of superb B-list actors (Rip Torn, Powers Boothe, Michael Ironside, Clancy Brown etc.) then you'll love this lean, mean action flick.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Classic, 31 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Extreme Prejudice [DVD] (DVD)
Considering when this was done, back in 1987, this was a hell of a film for what basically happens today in some parts of the world. This is not a typical cheesy 80's action film, it does have some real strong moments, not to mention (Powers Booths) performance. Made up this finally came out on DVD, it's been a long time since I seen it.

Worth getting whether your a NN fan or just want to see a classic action film to add to you're collection.

This is a brilliant film, very violent, but with a good storyline, something lacking in all to many modern films. The actors are perfect, all of whom went onto bigger things.
