I took some time to trawl through audiophile forums to find the best player for sound quality, which is all I really care about. Cowon seemed to come up top in this price range. I am not disappointed, sound quality is great, far better than ipod, and there are surprisingly precise controls for EQs, although the controls are a little fiddly. And it's loud! I haven't bothered with the included headphones, they're always rubbish, I use my own Octone Groovebuds which are also good value.
Thoroughly recommended.

I've used i-pods and creatives before this, but they just weren't loud enough. This little player lets you adjust every level to get that `perfect sound' - it also works with any file type - no need for itunes.

Once you get used to the file structure it is easy - similar to the structure of a PC. The battery lasts a while and because of its size it tucks away nicely in your inside pocket.

The screen is sharp, but small; this will play video but it is designed for music.

This is a real music lover's MP3; an understated design compared to apple, but far superior sound.

The best thing about this player - you can adjust the settings to make it LOUD!

I listen to classical music and many players suffer from insufficient volume and poor quality sound reproduction (including iPods). The Cowon i9 is excellent on both counts and I strongly recommend it. It's also well designed and the interface, while not iPod standard, is more than adequate. (I haven't used the headphones supplied -- I use my own Shure SE210s.)

This is a great mp3 player and once you get your head round how it works and understand you can only have 400 tracks in any one play list, You'll love it. I normally put mine on song mode and randomize my thousands of mp3 punk & rock tracks and don't bother with play lists..

1 Bad point....... i just wish I'd got the 16 or the 32gb version..

UPDATE REVIEW : September 30th 2012

I still love this player but I accidentally broke my earphones and its impossible to find a replacement here in the UK. You can find them in India or china but who would hand over their bank details, let alone run the risk of getting a fake pair from china with no chance of getting a refund..

The headphones I broke are Cowon SE2 Earphones, you can find Cowon CE-1 In-Ear Stereo Earphones here on amazon. But are they as good or better as the ones that come bundles with the player is anyone's guess. So come on Cowon and make it possible to buy spares here in the UK & on amazon...

It's still a 10 out of 10 player....

This is a cracking little item, nicely packaged and with a free clear plastic protector sleeve. Instructions are in Korean, so pretty useless to us Europeans, but the English manuals are easy enough to download from their website. I had no problems making it able to download tracks via my iMac (you have to delete and reformat the i9 drive to make it mac compatible, but its really no problem, and instructions are well documented in various forums on the web.)
Sound is absolutely superb and thrashes the various Apple offerings, and thats being said by an Apple fanatic, who has had an itouch and a nano before. Controls are a little quirky, but pretty simple to get used to, and the screen, although small is nice and clear, although I think its a little fanciful of Cowon to say you can watch video on it !
5 Star rating for this, and my ears are just loving it.

The control takes a little getting used to, but the numerous features aboard are absolutely amazing.
With its broad filetype playback and extensive sound enhancing/equalizing options, I don't believe I had anything left to wish for.

There's one minor bug though: when you update the metadata tags on an audio file that's already inside the device and registered in its database, the tag update won't be reflected untill you re-introduce it to the database as a new file (for example by changing the filename or deleting it from the device first, then letting it re-build the library, then putting the file back on).

Apart from that I have no complaints, it's a brilliant little thing.

I have used Apple and Creative MP3 players in the the past but decided to give Cowon a try. I was not disappointed. The sound quality is the best I have heard. I also invested in some top end Philips headphones as the earphones supplied are not "buds". This has enhanced the sound quality even more. The software takes a bit of getting used to but once you are familiar with it it's a peice of cake. You can also drag and drop files into the player in windows as it shows up as a seperate drve when plugged into a PC.

I study alot of reviews on MP3 players and decided on the Cowon i9 after reading about the great sound everyone talks about. I have not been disappointed, this player will put out some big CLEAR sound. It also feels well made and is easy to operate.

Excellent sound quality and a nice finish make this a good product that is well worth its price. Maybe the menu system could a little easier to learn, but I got there so I expect anyone can!
