I bought this book having read Joseph M Marshall's book on Crazy Horse. This was an amazingly tender book, written from an historical and semi-folk lore perspective. Rarely can a book make me cry, but "Crazy Horse" did. So when I saw "The Lakota Way" I knew I was going to have a good read. I was not disappointed. Having been interested in the Lakota way of life and the principles by which they live their lives (and the "Good Red Road") I could not have bought a better book. It is written in chapters; each one taking a different principle. For example, the first chapter is about "Honour". This tells us what honor is and how it is regarded in Native American/Lakota society. Then Marshall supports this with either one or two folk stories which have been passed down verbally through centuries; from Grandfather/Grandmother to Grandchildren. As one is reading these stories, one can virtually see the fireside in the encampment on a dark night; the whole family gathering around, telling stories about star-crossed lovers, brave hearted warriors and old couples who have shared a lifetime together (as in the story of "No Moccassins") I was disappointed when this book ended but I feel that I have learned much about the Lakota way of life through Marshall's explanations and the stories he tells. Nobody can tell a story like a true Lakota.

I am so pleased with this book. I love the Lakota and was led to Joseph Marshall by a wonderful chain of events. I have travelled to South Dakota and been to Rosebud, so this collection of stories have enormous meaning for me.
The stories within the book are based on the oral tradition that the Lakota used to offer wisdom and guidance to their tribal people through the ages. The stories are interspersed with modern day tales written in a wonderfully sensitive manner.

If you are fascinated by the Native American Culture especially the Lakota, I highly recommend this lovely book. I will be dipping into it over and over again to receive wise counsel when I am looking for the answers to life's challenges.
Many thanks Joseph for this wonderful book.

The Native American original people have been treated disrespectfully for generations but they remain a noble and indomitable spiritual people who have so much to teach the rest of the world. Mitakuye Oyasin.

Excellent book by Joseph Marshall that everyone should read and apply to what most of us believe to be a more "advanced modern world"!

The book is insightful - it provides an understanding of what was, and is, the Native American way of life and philosophy. It is a very easy and enjoyable book to read. It combines story, with personal experience, with history - but the negative side to this is that it can make the reading a little disjointed at times.
