4.0 out of 5 stars Buy the expanded edition
This book first arrived in a blizzard of publicity back in 2005. Now 4 years on, it has been re-released in a revised and expanded edition with an extra 90 pages of bonus material (be sure to order the 336-page edition) consisting of newspaper columns and blog entries, along with a few corrections and an overall restructuring (the previous introductory magazine excerpts...

3.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and fun, but ultimately light on content
This book does two important things - it challenges the reader to really think about the causes of things, and it makes modern economic thinking interesting and accessible to the mass audience. It's also a good, fun read, and for all these reasons it should be applauded.

In this book Steven Levitt develops ideas about a number of aspects of economic and social...

3.0 out of 5 stars Short, entertaining and the thoughtful side of provocative, 22 April 2006
I thought this was pretty cool, and it doesn't take long to read. Always a concern for the time-poor philosopher of today. Half an afternoon in my case.

It's entertaining (tea-snorting rather than rip-roaring), not too up itself, pretty grown up (adopts the always-applicable grown-up answer to everything "it depends"), and although not academic as such does contain ... contain yourselves fearful students ... A Bibliograpy!

Worth coming out of the union bar to read.

1.0 out of 5 stars More Hype than type, 1 Sept. 2006
By
spdeveille (Dublin,Ireland) - See all my reviews
Lots of hype of this book but I didn't find it interesting and to be honest found it a bit banal, like reading a school book. Some of the Authors assumptions are definitely unique like reasoning that the drop in crime rate in NewYork was to due the amount of abortions 20years previous rather than the newly installed metropolitan computer system (a centralised system that for the first time connected all the boroughs) , combined the revamp and extra amount of cops on the beat.

The Author would be an interesting fellow at the dinner table but the book is too heavily americanised and quite disappointing, I found it to be pulp fiction.
