4.0 out of 5 stars Ah Dang: Dubtitles
Most people watching this will probably be puzzled by what's going on, that's mainly because you are suppossed to read the Manga it's based on. Well if you don't want to do that you could listen to the great commentary which will fill you in on some of the Backstory and characters to better understand the story.

The story is set after WW3 where nukes were not...

2.0 out of 5 stars Shirows work too large for the small screen?
Masmune Shirows Appleseed has been popular with Manga fans for years and given this particular titles strong following, an animated version of the original comic book was probably inevitable. The post apocaliptic utopian setting and cinematic story telling style that characterised the comic book have however sadly been trimmed down for this comparatively low budget...

4.0 out of 5 stars Ah Dang: Dubtitles, 4 May 2012

Most people watching this will probably be puzzled by what's going on, that's mainly because you are suppossed to read the Manga it's based on. Well if you don't want to do that you could listen to the great commentary which will fill you in on some of the Backstory and characters to better understand the story.

The story is set after WW3 where nukes were not used but the Planet was still devastated by war, after this a Mega City called Olympus was built and was deemed the perfect city to live in and was managed by Bioroids. But some people don't like the idea of Bioroids in control and thus terrorists attack the city, up to stop them are SWAT members Deunan and here cyborg partner Briareos. Now they must stop the terrorist's before they try to destroy the city.

The video and sound are great but I think the English dub has far too many swear words in the second half of the anime and the subtitles are actually dubtitles which is really a bother for those who want to watch it's Original Japanese Language.

Extras:
Manga Trailer (Shadow Skill)
Video of Images
Commentary with Jonathan Clements and Larissa Murray (voice of Deunan)

5.0 out of 5 stars What a great Anime film., 7 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Appleseed [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
I remember seeing the original Appleseed film and loving it when I was in high school, even though the original was only on for an hour. Well I have to say this new version is fantastic. The new CG artwork is amazing and will completely blow your mind if your new to this type of animation, or even if your already a Manga fan you will love this. Quite along film as well which is great and that makes it worth the money.

Buy the way, make sure you buy this on Blu-ray as its worth seeing the HD artwork detail in full. Also you can select in the main menu for the English version, as it comes as standard as a German Blu-ray language DVD. Very easy to change the language.

This is a really great sci-fi movie that keeps you in a pretty good story all the way through. It will be better for some tastes than others but I think it's among the best ever made animated movies.

I have been dying to get hold of this film on Bluray and my wait has been very well rewarded with this purchase.
The film looked good on DVD but this version looks, and sounds, even better. And yes it is the right region to play on my UK Bluray player.
Happily the sleeve is reversible so that one doesn't have to endure that huge '12' certification logo that can be seem bottom left in the product photo.
A very, very happy-bunny.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review for 2004 version, 16 Jun 2005
There are two versions of this film, the original (drawn) version and the 2004 (CGI).
Having seen this film in subtitles before its release in English I have to say it's an awesome film. The CGI is stunning, out-classing all except Ghost in the Shell 2.
The film's set in the future where bioroids (ie: human look-alikes) co-exist with humans and, like any good Manga, the ending has a surprising twist.
Top-notch film; definitely one of the best Mangas in my list.

5.0 out of 5 stars IGNORE OTHER REVIEWS FOR THE *WRONG PRODUCT*, 21 May 2005
The reason is because they are for the old purely handdrawn animated, NON-CGI version. Notice how it says the reviews are for an 'out of print' version. This is an all new updated version I have ordered from Amazon.com that is purely in CGI and made in 2004! Don't believe me? Go to www.amazon.com and look for Appleseed (the 2004 one) in the DVD section. The original had pretty basic animation, but in this version it is all action. Try go to [...] and check the trailer out in the 'independent' category (if it is still there whenever you see this review).

2.0 out of 5 stars Shirows work too large for the small screen?, 6 Dec 2002
By
Stephen (Northampton, Northamptonshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Appleseed [2005] [DVD] (DVD)
Masmune Shirows Appleseed has been popular with Manga fans for years and given this particular titles strong following, an animated version of the original comic book was probably inevitable. The post apocaliptic utopian setting and cinematic story telling style that characterised the comic book have however sadly been trimmed down for this comparatively low budget production. The central theme of the terrorists struggle to assert their own identities against the totalitarian olympian society is not given adequate space in a very short running time and character development suffers as a result. Deunan and Briaereos the principal characters are almost added into the plot as an afterthought and their personalities don't really have the space to shine. In summary the best that can be said is that the most was made of limited resources in this work and my advice for new viewers of shirows work is to either start with the original comics or try the much better done Ghost in the Shell.
