Great ultra-portable netbook,
By Prospero71 (Manchester, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Asus 1008HA 10-inch Netbook (Intel Atom N280 1.66 GHz Processor, 1 GB RAM, 250 GB HDD, 6 hr Battery, WLAN, Bluetooth, Webcam, Windows 7 Starter, White) (Electronics)
I've been using the netbook for a couple of weeks now and am generally very happy with it. I bought it for "light use," email, web browsing and skype rather than serious work with Office and have found it highly suitable for that purpose. It runs Office (2007) perfectly adequately, too.
The battery life is coming in at around 4 hours, and although the keyboard lacks travel it's perfectly usable and well laid out. The multi-touch trackpad is a great feature, seamlessly integrated into the casing. The display is sharp and bright, and the sound is louder and clearer than I've heard through some full-sized laptops. I was concerned about the look of the white plastic before it arrived, but it actually looks quite good and doesn't show fingerprints as much as I'm sure the black or darker ones would. As something of a geek I'd also recommend installing the Ubuntu Netbook Remix of Linux onto it as an alternative to Windows. It boots quicker and is far more responsive than the pre-installed Windows 7, plus I also think the user interface is easier to use on a machine of this size. If you're reasonably experienced with computers and want to give it a try, it's a free download and a fairly straightforward install process. It runs happily alongside Windows and you can choose to boot either one as the machine starts up. Just google "UNR"... Overall I highly recommend this machine. Although there are cheaper alternatives I've yet to see one that's any slimmer or lighter...

Great device to use, but fundamental flaw,

Bought this in May 2010, we were really impressed with it, worked well, good performance, exactly what we needed, 6 months in the screen connection to the base broke, yet I've owned many laptops, never had a problem before. After the initial trials of logging a call I have to say Asus support was superb, and they have the best courier collection service for repairs I've ever used (I've spent time in IT support so do know about this, Sony was awful in my experience), I was genuinely really impressed. But a few months later it happened again, just over the 12 months warranty limit, and I was dealing with a brick wall, stating I'd have to pay for repairs as my only option. With the same kit issue twice in that period when we are careful owners (my current main PC I bought in 2002 and still works fine) it's not down to normal wear and tear. For me there was no way I could get it repaired as it would simply fail again in a few months, rendering the product useless in 13 months. Very disappointed, sadly I won't ever buy from Asus again as despite all the good points I can not trust their build quality nor a flexible approach in dealing with a product flaw.

Cute but fragile notebook,

I have owned this notebook for a year and a half now and it is most definitely coming to the end of it's life.
Unfortunately it was the day after the 1year warranty that everything started to fall apart. At first this notebook was gorgeous, cute and everything that I needed. It was quick but I must say going from a 17inch laptop to 10inch notebook saw huge differentiations in work. Not all websites would fit in the 10inch frame and it was frustrating trying to do more than 2 things at once with such a small monitor. The battery wire became very loose after travelling with my notebook, so I do not take this out with me anymore. The back of the notebook has become busted, where the join fold is, the notebook needs special care when opening and closing otherwise will bust. The exterior light showing if it is charging or fully charged no longer works. All in all, this was a good notebook for the 1st year, it can not take too much travel or wear and tear, it will only last about 2 years maximum. |
