I got this hot shoe/umbrella holder to go with the light stand and umbrella I also purchased.

The unit has a fitting on the bottom that can be used to fit to a light stand or if that is removed to a normal camera fitting on a tripod. Attaches to the light stand quite firmly and gives you confidence that it will stay there. Above that is the ball head which has a hole through which an umbrella can be attached and above that is the "hot" shoe in which the flash can be mounted.

The ball joint is not the smothest and it feels as though it would break if you over tighten the screw. It does stay in place with an umbrella attached and the flash in place. The hot shoe should accept most flash guns that have a standard mount. The hot shoe can be adjusted to face the direction you want and then tightend with a knurled ring. Adjusting the hot shoe was probably the hardest part to get where you want it.

This is a pretty cheap unit and I don't have any expectations about how long it lasts. If I have a need for the kit to be more robust then I will invest in some pro quality kit but for the project that I have got this for it should be adequate. Recommended as it does what it is supposed to but don't expect a lifetime of use from it.

This product as described is supposed to fit the Nikon SB 800 flash (and will not fit the SB900 either - different problem).

The dimensions of the slot in the black plastic shoe mounted on the top of the swivel assembly is not large enough to accept the flash assembly.

We have suggested to the seller BV Electronics that they either change their product description to delete reference to the SB 800 or correct the dimension on the part. Apparently they have not done so.

There is a simple modification to the part using a small file that will work. This video shows how to make that modification.

Read all the reviews for this seller BV Electronics. Many are positive but several are negative. It appears that sometimes, the seller's ability to provide customer service is quite lacking. This product for me was one of those occurances.

After several emails, they have offered to have the product returned but offered no solution or attempt to provide any "customer delight"

Good price - but you get what you pay for. It is small and light (good and bad) but it can be hard to get a tight enough grip on the knob that clamps the ball base of the top part to make it tight enough to hold the umbrella/flash firmly in place. I also found my knuckles coming into conflict with one knob while turning another - and I don't have particularly big hands.

This is a budget product, so it's made of light-weight alloys and plastic. But it does the job it's designed for, so if you're a beginner after some budget kit to get you started, you'll be OK with this [...] ball head. It works, and it won't have your bank manager ringing you first thing tomorrow morning! Just don't expect top-of-the-range build and precision.

I got this to use with a Canon Speedlite 420EX and occasionally with unbrella too - it looked like it would do the job. Unfortunately the screw to 'lock' the ball joint in place is not strong enough, especially when used with an umbrella, and has difficulty holding the equipment steady and in place. I'll be looking for a better bracket to use.

You could pay 4 times as much for one of these. Fits my lighting stands perfectly. I don't use the hotshoe mount as I use remote triggers on them. As for the quality - they're not bad...don't expect stainless steel for this price!

Slightly better to use than the plastic ones, but still will not stand up to pro work. At the price it's clearly aimed at amateurs and those juts starting out, and for them, it's ideal.

I am happy with the product. My flash gun (Yongnuo Speedlite YN460-II ) fits perfectly. It probably won't last forever but hey, look again at the price. Very fast delivery. Thanks!

For the small outlay, this is a fine piece of kit, I use it with the shoot through umbrella and an FL36R gun and it holds them both quite happily.
