5.0 out of 5 stars La Greco
I was lucky enough to see the legendary Juliette Greco in concert in London in the late sixties, when she was about forty and I was still in my teens. She is now an incredible 85, and still making the occasional album. She looked impeccable then, mostly in her customary black, long dark hair with a fringe, and she still looks great now.

Her music is as ageless as she seems to be, something this superb 2-CD compilation confirms. At well over two hours long, it is excellent value, with some terrific photos of Greco, full track listings, and (in my copy) brief booklet notes in French - though perhaps I have an import edition. The recordings, in surprisingly pristine sound, date from the early 50s to the early 70s.
Her voice was always a clear, uncluttered, relatively restrained instrument, less passionate and forceful than Piaf, wittier and more varied than Francoise Hardy. She is heard here on 44 songs, many of them written by some big names, including Brel, Aznavour, Gainsbourg, Brecht-Weill, with lyrics by such luminaries as writers Queneau, Prevert and even Sartre, as well as songs by more expected songwriters like Trenet, Ferre, Brassens and her third husband Gerard Jouannest, Brel`s usual co-writer.
The songs that work best for me are the more straightforward ones, the `novelty` song being hardly her forte. When she sings Sous Le Ciel De Paris (a Piaf staple) or Les Feuilles Mortes (aka Autumn Leaves) I am standing in a Paris street, soaking up the city`s unique ambience and smelling the coffee and Gauloises.
The young Juliette Greco was known as much for hanging around the cafes of Paris with Sartre, de Beauvoir, Boris Vian and other writers and philosophers, drinking it all in, as for her singing. (How diametrically opposite to the life of Edith Piaf, her main `rival` in those long-ago days.) She met a visiting Miles Davis in 1948 when she was a mere 21 and they became on-off lovers, close friends till his death in 1991. I mention all this because Greco has never been as well-known in the UK as Piaf, Aznavour, Hardy or lesser singers such as Sasha Distel or Mireille Mathieu, but lived as fascinating a life as any of them, and has a voice and artistic approach of sheer integrity, all of which comes across eloquently on this compilation.
The word is class.
This is as fine an introduction - or reminder - as I can imagine of this unique artist.
Vive La Greco!

Having bought an LP of Greco in 1964 on impulse, I was stunned by the voice and the songs. This CD compilation is as vibrant and ravishing as ever. Excellent quality and fantastic value.
