4.0 out of 5 stars The Comedians Box Set
Made in the days before political correctness. This whole programme would today be reviewed and virtually dismantled with most of the material banned from the airways as many of the jokes would be deemed to be offensive to someone. Described as "The Comedians - Series 1-7 - Complete" it is in fact only the HIGHLIGHTS of each season. Very misleading title. As a highlights show, the choice of featured material is then often weak and includes serveral comics repeating jokes. Poor.

Made in the days before political correctness. This whole programme would today be reviewed and virtually dismantled with most of the material banned from the airways as many of the jokes would be deemed to be offensive to someone. Yet it reminds us of when people were much more innocent, and they laughed at the silliness of the jokes, not the so-called victims. When you see a black man like Josh White telling daft black jokes, it becomes a leveller. Same for the Irish comedians like Frank Carson. When people are laughing together at the same thing, there is suddenly no room for fear and hatred. The comedians on here may be clowns but they're not fools. Both they and the audience know that the jokes are silly nonsense and exaggerated. My opinion is that it's better to have mutual laughter than hatred and true nasty racism.

I didn't laugh at all of the jokes (but probably about 70% of them), but I bought the set for nostalgia purposes and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Thanks for the DVD, it's brilliant but it's a petty they cut the original series, but either way it's still very enjoyable.

Thanks, Neil Foster

A good reminder of what we are missing from many of the current crop stand up comedians that appear on our TVs.

Brings back the great comedians something that is lacking in this day. Hubby throughly enjoyed it, these DVDs are better than the new one recorded in 2012.

2.0 out of 5 stars The biggest jokers are off screen in this production, 27 Dec. 2010

This review is from: The Comedians - Series 1-7 - Complete [DVD] [1971] (DVD)
Was this compilation spread across 7 discs to make it appear that there was a lot more to it ? Only half that number of discs was necessary to contain. the material presented , and possibly one double layer disc would have sufficed if all duplication had been edited out . If you watch this and hear a joke you consider worth repeating , don't worry that you might not remember it , you will very likely hear it again , at least once more . Whenever was the `Best of ' the same joke(s) being told repeatedly : only one version can be the `best' .Even selected audience reaction shots , of which there are very few , are shown more than once .
Most of the comedians appear to have spent some time at a gent's outfitters before the show , only to emerge to find that the hairdresser's / barber's shop was shut . Colin Crompton may well have been the inspiration for Donald Trump's current thatch .

Whilst a lot of the jokes do contain elements considered very non-pc these days , there is obviously a considerable amount of material missing from the original series . Probably deemed a bit too controversial and capable of provoking a barrage of protest from the loudmouth , holier than thou , minority . Also , in my opinion , the comics performances are noticeably hampered by the restrictions placed upon them .
Much criticism has been proffered , in recent times , by people who class the previous era comics as racist and sexist . Maybe the younger generation would benefit from watching this stuff then comparing it with the xenophobic rantings of Al Murray , the sneering at fat/disabled people by Jimmy Carr and the disgustingly descriptive tales of sexual encounters , often involving anal , of Frank Skinner ( and Chubby Brown is still considered too outrageous for TV !) . Have you seen Dave Spikey ridiculing `Dobbers' ? They seem to think that it's ok as long as you don't mention skin colour or single out any racial stereotype , except from the audience . Mocking what they see as stereotypes according to social class / educational ability / wealth , appears to be acceptable to them . All laughs are gained at the expense of others . I'm not knocking it . I think most of today's crop of comics are hilariously talented and believe it all depends on the individual's understanding of what a sense of humour is , and having one . Only dish it out if you can honestly take it too . We can all laugh at ourselves , and life , together . It is a way of coping with the nastiness that abounds , reality really , most of which is outwith our control . But who would these people rather their own kids watched , expletive riddled filth and ridicule of the less than perfect , or daft stories told by people of various races and beliefs having a laugh together in a manner which emphasises the fact that it is all meant to be jolly banter . None of it is meant to be taken seriously : do that and you'll only upset yourself .
