5.0 out of 5 stars Good book for its (IMO overplayed, but much-loved) genre, was not expecting this much after a previous novel by Kathy Love, 20 Jan. 2010

I've just finished reviewing Demon Can't Help It by this author, which I gave 1*, but would have given it 0* if such a rating existed, and though I wasn't intending to read anything more of hers, I'd reserved this at the library, so thought WHY NOT?

I was more than pleasantly surprised: Sebastian is the bad-boy, love-em-and-leave-em youngest and only single one of three vampire brothers (Rhys and Christian get their own tales, but their little sister Elizabeth was killed by Christian's mad vampire sire some 150-odd years ago) who runs a bar, and who is considered by SPAMM (Society of Preternaturals Against The Mistreatment of Mortals) to be the 3rd most dangerous vampire alive. So Wilhemina (Mina), who was turned against her will by the handsome Donatello some 103 or so years ago, and who lives with her werewolf scientist friend Lizzie, who also belongs to SPAMM, is sent to sabotage his business and to make him see the error of his ways.

Mina gets a job as a waitress at Sebastian's bar, but unfortunately (for SPAMM) and fortunately for Sebastian, she is bumbling and not very good at what she does, so her sabotage attemps fall flat and Sebastian finds himself liking her and intrigued by her. One night he follows her to a SPAMM meeting, and she's so scared that the Society's Saviours might turn on him, they leave furtively, and agree on a compromise: he will show her how living the life of a vampire can be fun and in return he will stop feeding from humans (whom he does not harm), for a period of a month.

They become friends and lovers and Mina blossoms into a vampire that is no longer fearless of humans and masses of people and emotions, and she tells him how she became a vampire, but they have to see each other in secret. Mina accidentally blurts out her love, and whilst Sebastian has feelings for her, he is reluctant to leave his lothario ways and become 'fang-whipped' like his brothers, but he's coming round to the idea. One night at Sebastian's club, a young female gets attacked and describes the attacker, who Mina starts to rcognise...and as his name is revealed to be Donatello, she faints, convinced he is after her.

Shortly after at the club, Daniel, a member of SPAMM pops up and accuses her of betraying SPAMM, so she lies about how she's manipulated Sebastian, to get Daniel off her back, but the latter overhears her and believes what she's said to be the truth, and tells her it's over. Later in the night, Daniel calls to tell her that an emergency SPAMM meeting has been called and that she is to explain herself, but she turns up only to find that none of the other members are there, and that Daniel is in fact Donatello, an incubus, who has come back to toy with her. Luckily, she's bonded to Sebastian and though he's hurt and disillusioned, he hears her calling to him and realises that she is in danger, and with his brothers, saves Mina and dispatches Donatello, Buffy-style.

Later, at a SPAMM meeting, Sebastian and Mina explain how they've changed each other and are good for each other, and SPAMM approves, so they are home safe and sound. Christian and Rhys are there too, and they finally meet Mina's roommate...Lizzie. I will say no more, other than that Lizzie gets her own tale called MY SISTER IS A WEREWOLF, which I can't wait to read. A really excellent,fast-paced and feel-good book, with contemporary funny stuff that made me giggle. Based on this, I may have to reconsider reading more of this author's contemp vampire stuff, but perhaps not any more Demon stuff!

This is number 3 in the Young Brothers series. If you have not read them yet, I'd do that first before starting on this book. Unlike some other series I've read, this books are quite linked to each other, so if you want the full effect start with book 1 "Fangs For The Memories" and book 2 "Fangs But No Fangs".
Back to this book. Here we read the story of the last Young brother, Sebastian. He is and always have been a free spirited playboy. Never gave belonging to anyone else but himself a second thought. He is the proud owner of the very popular night club Carfax Abbey and being surrounded by beautiful ladies at ALL times makes Sebastian's life perfect .... or as he thought before he met Mina, a very plain, clumsy and quite peculiar new cocktail-waitress who has joined his staff at Carfax Abbey.
The reader follows Sebastian fighting his own feelings, wishing not to need whatever he already knows IS what he wants. And Mina, finding out that the cruel and careless image of Sebastian that has been stamped into her by her group-members not at all fits the reality. She is, for the first time, introduced to the real Sebastian Young.
It is truley a very amusing and enjoyable read. I nothing but love this wonderful series. Buy all 3 of them and enjoy!
