3.0 out of 5 stars This'll keep you guessing 'til the end!
David Twohys Perfect Getaway jumps straight in with both feet from the first scenes and really never stops with Steve Zahn and Mira Jovovich ( who play Cliff & Cydney) who head-off to Hawaii on honeymoon. They hire everything they need and make for the trail which will lead them to the isolated beaches on one of the small islands stopping to give another young couple -...

A Perfect Getaway is set in Hawaii; following a newly-wed couple Cydney & Cliff (Mila Jojovich - Resident Evil & Steve Zahn) who are trekking Hawaii for their honeymoon. Setting out on their trek, they bump into other couples and hikers who are spooked by reports of killers on the next isle over (Oahu) picking off newly-weds. They decide to continue nonetheless and end up meeting another couple, Nicko and his long-time girlfriend Georgia (Timothy Olyphant - Hitman & Kiele Sanchez), an ex-special forces soldier with some tall(?) stories and a butcher. As the couples proceed further into the lush paradise they start to suspect each other, further exacerbated by the periodic appearance of an ex-con couple and their odd behaviour. Will their suspicions of each other tear them apart? Or will it galvanise them against the impending horror?

What really sets this film above other psychological thrillers is the fact that you genuinely have no idea who is the bad guy and who is the good guy. All of the characters display odd traits that make you suspect them; whether it's Nicko's casual familiarity with an assortment of blades and the hunting bow, Georgias ability to butcher a goat without batting an eyelid, Kale's prison demeanour or even Cydney's allusion to a haunted past, the characters are truly ambiguous. Whilst it's obvious that someone is not telling the truth, you are never quite sure who it is and this is what keeps the tension in place throughout this film. The acting is believable and you develop a genuine sense of affinity for the characters.

The locale is breathtakingly beautiful, there are long shots of the routes they take over the island, and the scenery is eye-meltingly gorgeous in parts. Credit to the director David Twohy here for putting together an extremely picturesque cinematic experience. The waterfalls, jungles and beaches will have you yearning for a holiday by the end of it all, despite the violence, which isn't excessive.

The DVD has the usual suite of extras and a couple of deleted scenes, but I would recommend the Bluray for the directors cut, it's unrated and fills out the characters a little more, adding to the paranoia. Highly recommended for an enjoyable thriller that will keep you guessing!!

4.0 out of 5 stars The perfect getaway - on a Sunday afternoon, 2 May 2011

I found this film the ideal way to spend my Sunday afternoon. It was an easy watch that provided just the right mix of components to provide the perfect balance of light cinematic relief.

It wasn't too intense, yet there was tension and action enough to hold your attention. The story was easy to follow so you didn't have to concentrate too hard in case you missed something, yet there were nough twist and turns in there to keep you guessing.

The basis for the story is nothing new really: A bunch of people are stuck on a trek up and mountain and some of the members are killers - and while this wasn't the best example of the genre, it was still enjoyable and was executed in a slightly different way than usual.

The Blu Ray copy I had looked stunning and with the film being set in Hawaii, I found Blu Ray certainly added to th cinematic experience. The disc was, however, very light on extras with only an alternative 'scripted ending' (which turned out to be the ending used, just with some dialogue missing - so nothing different or 'alternative') and a 'making of documentary.

The disc conatins two version of the film - the theatrical and the director's cut. I watched the director's cut and, I wouldn't say it felt short - but it certainly didn't feel long. It was over quite quickly, but this too was another reason why I think 'The Perfect Getaway' is the perfect film to throw on and escape on a lazy afternoon or evening.

What I really liked about this film, is the way it continued to make you keep guessing! With most horror films, you know who is the bad guy, but with this everyone is a suspect, all displaying odd characteristics that make you change your mind throughout. I would highly recommend this to all.

Such a twisted and secretive plot, it'll keep you on your toes all the way through. Definitely worth the buy, don't read too many detailed reviews of the plot though, otherwise it really isn't worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Killer Thriller, 26 Feb. 2013

This review is from: A Perfect Getaway [DVD] (DVD)
A couple are on honeymoon in Hawaii and head off on a three day hike to visit a beautiful beach. They hear news from another island of some newly weds being murdered, noone has been caught and there are rumored they are now on their Island.

Are they there? Who is it? Will they get away? The start of this film is a bit slow but, especially in light of the whole film, is very well handled to keep you interest as the scene is set and characters introduced, some with red flags. The characters interaction, dialogue and suspense is very good.

There's some good twists and turn later in the film and it ends up a very good thriller that's pretty intelligent. I was going to pick out praise for individual actors but that would be unfair as the main cast all great.

Two nice, rather naive newlyweds honeymoon on a Hawaiian island, trekking into remote areas where help, if it were needed, might be hard to find. She's a pretty girl-next-door type, he's rather geeky - a screen writer. Bad news: there's word of a murder - another young couple ; and naturally the two young things are alarmed and begin to look over their shoulders a bit. To make matters worse, they do meet some creepy people ... could any of them be the killers?

Set in stunningly beautiful Hawaiian locations and with some excellent cinematography, this is a thoroughly enjoyable film. All of the principal actors do a great job, and there's uncertainty and tension aplenty, as well as a few blackly humorous moments. There's a little gore, but it's occasional and never gratuitous. What I can't say anything about is how the plot develops - and that's where the film's greatest strength lies - except that it is very ingenious and very absorbing. This is a clever film which never sets out to do more than entertain but does that very well indeed. It's a joy on the eye, keeps you on the edge of your seat in places, and is intelligent as well, which is nice. Well worth seeing, in fact!
